Iaorana! Just posted my TripReport for my 3 week stay on Tahiti, Moorea & BoraBora. Just some traveling tips:
-Diabetic? Take your own supply of artificial sweetener, I did but none to be found on my trip.
-Love Pizza? Take your own Crushed Red Pepper. None to be found and their idea of chili is a vinigary substance that doesnt taste too great.
-Pension Lagoonarium on BoraBora? To the left is a little snack stand where the kids sell sandwiches for 150xpf (yes, thats right). Also a little further down is a small "magasin" where munchies can be bought. Other than that, you are far from everything unless you have a car.
-Like IceTea? They dont. I took the packets you mix in the plactic water bottles. Be sure to take them in "2's" since the most common bottles are rather large.
-Take a small First Aid kit. Or you will have to find a Pharmacie for cough syrup, etc.
-Like Pareos? Track down the Tahiti Maohi factory in Pirae, behind the Carrefour. I was buying them for 800xpf. Saw the same thing in stores for 2x's that price if not more. Also, locals sell their starting at about 1000xpf.
-Hate flying in a sardine can? Dont flying Hawaiian Air. After this trip, I would have gladly paid the extra $300USD and the 2nd bag fee to avoid Hawaiian's Service, or lack of it.
-Making Friends in Tahiti? If invited to stay at a home, never show up empty handed. The People look down on people arriving empty handed then going for supplies, food, gifts, etc. I learned this one on this trip and found customs were very simular to my own NativeAmer People so it was no problem for me. Also, when families dine, the children eat first. So no jumping on the table until the kids are done. Shoes come off outside the homes and NO UPGRADING on leaving, hahahah

Great tips, Islandlubber. There isn't a lot of iced tea in Canada either (and when you get it, it's usually pretty artificial). I always pack all the medications I need (both prescription--obviously!--and OTC wherever I travel). I've never had crushed red pepper on a pizza--is that an American thing (or just a New Mexico thing?).

Good hints about bringing your own artificial sweeteners (if you use them) and crushed red pepper. We use the pepper for a variety of things, not just pizza -- also in guacamole and in stews, and our local friends always ask for the bottle when we leave. We make iced tea with Lipton tea bags (bought locally) in boiled water, then cooled and poured into empty water bottles and refrigerated.

That's sad news about Hawaiian, which we haven't flown in several years... I didn't think economy seats could get any worse than ATN's!

I'm planning on smuggling as many bottles of Tapatio in as I can. I expect Tahiti will be easily corrupted by my favorite hot sauce in short time.

LOVE Tapatio...But I'm also addicted to the Cholula lime and chipotle flavors.. :-)

I always bring some crushed red pepper flakes to cook with. It probably my favorite seasoning to use....right after garlic!

OldWife, I think the red pepper is an American thing. But then again FP is the only other country Ive been to since I was a kid.
Barbi, I first flew Hawaiian in 2007 (up to 3 times a year to Hawai'i). Now Im looking forward to when Southwest Airlines start flying there next year. Hawaiian has really gone downhill. Next trip, I think I'll take tea bags and show my friends how to make Suntea. BTW, Cholula makes small packets like ketchup, mayo, etc. Taking some next time, too

IL...have you checked out http://minimus.biz/? It is a GREAT place to find all sorts of travel size items...including foods, spices, condiments, etc. I always stock up before a trip. It's nice to not have to buy full size things.
