This is a shore excursion option on our PG cruise and we were wondering if others have done this and what their thoughts are.
I had heard the 'sales pitch' might be a little long...but the whole thing is only 1 1/2 hrs long, so I guess it couldn't be THAT bad.
We are simply interested in seeing the growing process and not so much interested in seeking out pearls to purchase (although we will do that somewhere I suppose).
Thanks,
Steve

TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.

I wonder if this is the tour at the Gauguin Pearl Farm as I don't know of any other farms that give tours on Rangiroa. (We did not do the cruise but stayed at a pension next door to this pearl farm.)If this is the farm, you will be very intrigued by the process of placing the nucleus to the actual harvest and everything inbetween.
The air conditioned boutique where you are hearded after the actual tour is wonderful and they staff are complete no pressure and very helpful. It's great education if anything. You'll love the way they price loose pearls which is by size and grade. You'll see boxes of pearls, and every box contains pearls of the same grade and price, and all you need to do is compare the colors to find the one you want. Believe me, you should take a good look as they are priced competitively and they can mount pearls on the spot. Ask them to put the pearls in a white paper cup filled with water. They will gladly do it and encourage buyers to inspect them in water, which causes some amazing color plays off the nacre. If I remember correctly, it's one way to verify real vs. fakes.
I highly recommend you take a look at the semi-baroques and baroques - they're about $35 to $55 -some with very good lustre and excellent color, and the pendant mounting is another $22 and up. Makes a great and inexpensive souvenir if you're not in the market for the round grade A, B, or C pearls, which are much higher in cost.

Thanks rodjune. Good stuff. We have gone ahead and booked that tour.
43 more 'get ups' until we head to the airport!

We took this tour in Feb. It was very informative. Their prices were pretty good. We were still looking around when the van was ready to leave. They told us we could stay (I think there were 6 of us) They took us back to the dock in their little van.
