Hi there... my fiance and are 26 and 28 and will be travelling to FP for the first time next June for our honeymoon. We are very interested in booking the Gauguin but are somewhat concerned with the photos we see of the ship. It looks very outdated....almost 70's. Are these possibly just old pics? We are also wondering what the average age of the passengers might be. Any info will help?
Thanks

TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

Is decor really an issue? I dont' think the ship has been around since the 70's, and I took a look at the Radisson site and it looked quite fine to me! I didn't see anything resembling 70's or outdated decor .. my opinion though..

Jenandjamie,
We were on the PG about a month ago. We are in our mid 30's and have taken many cruises. We did stay in one of the balcony rooms which was extremly nice. The ship isnt young by any means but the upkeep is incredible. If you are looking for romance, the PG will provide it for you. The service is out of this world. Keep in mind that sometime in Nov or Dec the ship is going in to get refurbished. Even if it didnt the ship is in great shape. If you are looking for partying and night life, this may not be for you. After taking this trip my wife and I agree that we would never take any other cruise ship out there. Going back to the condition of the ship, we found it to be extremly nice. The food and the service says it all. I hope this helps.

I contacted Air Tahiti Nui and asked them about the rumor that they were going to put a new plane on line, and if it would be before our cruise on the Paul Gauguin on 0215/03. Here is their response. "ATN will be putting two new Airbus A340-300 on 02/01/03 to bring their fleet to four 340-300's. Yes you are scheduled to be one one of these for our 02/15/03 date. Just thought I would pass this information on to those interested in this sort of thing.

I think the Paul Gaugin is actually a fairly new vessel. I toured the bridge and can assure you that it is not 1970's vintage. The entire vessel is computer operated with joystick instead of the old wheel. Computer monitors and sytems all over the place. Maybe someone will correct me but I think it was built in the '90's. I think it is in dry dock right now . We were on it in 2001 and it was more like being on a big private yacht than the typical cruise ship. It is not a party boat, at least not that I could tell. The average passenger age is probably in the 50s however there were about 20 honeymooners on our cruise as well as a few children. Mostly folks from the US, but quite a few from Europe. One older single guy who was a real character that really made my wife laugh, he seemed to enjoy himself. As stated by others, the service is first class, the food was as good as many of the best places in New Orleans,IMHO, and it was Tahiti. We're going to do it again March 2003.

Is the PG all inclusive? Tips too? What about excursions and watersports such as snorkeling cruises and the motu picnic? Thanks.

On the Paul Gauguin there is NO tipping Excursions they charge for. No charge for water sports off the back of the ship. NO charge for the day at the Motu. In fact they have many free cocktail hours. Some people don't have a bar bill at the end!! When you first look at the PG price it looks high, but when you break it down and look at what is included it is very reasonable. Heck you only have to unpack ONCE!! That has to be worth something. Five couples on the PG 02/15/03 sailing date. We are getting excited.
