I just checked to see the status of our 02/15/03 Paul Gauguin cruise.
There are only 9 cabins left. I know of two couples on there 2nd week of back to back cruise, and our 5 couples. Who else will be joining us?

Bora Bora Cruises
TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

Hi Everyone:
Well it is one week to begin our trip to paradise and cruise on the Paul Gauguin.Found people doing back to back, but so far only one couple going the same time our group is going. Just thought I would check one last time to see if anyone on this board will be going.

Hi Everyone:
Our group started planning for this trip in February of 2001. After out 2002 cruise was cancelled by the cruise line, we are finally leaving tomorrow at 9:00 am. We have a 2 1/2 hour drive to the airport then fly to LAX, and then Saturday fly to Tahiti to go on the MS Paul Gauguin.
Would like to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who has responded to all the questions our group had, and even answered some that were not asked. A special thanks go out to PACIFIC ANDY and SHOPANDPAT who have been a big help.
PG CRUISNG: I hope I can be as good of help to you when we return.
Thanks Everyone!
Jim

Dear Jim B or anyone else out there who would like to answer:

My husband and I will be cruising PG March 29 after a 3 day stop on Manihi. I would love to hear any pointers you may have on particular things to pack and any excursions you particularly enjoyed. We are experienced divers and are unsure if the dives on the PG are worth the expense - any advise? If picking only one waverunner excursion (BB vs Moorea) would you recommend one in particular? If picking only one flight seeing tour (BB vs Moorea) would you recommend one in particular? Do you know how far they hike on the Hiking trails of the ancients on Moorea?
Hope you had a great time. I am counting the days.

I'm not a diver, but I have been to Manihi, and I've heard the diving is very good there. I know the snorkelling sure was. You might want to consider diving there. Can't really comment on the PG diving.

But, you will love Manihi. It's really a great resort, and a wonderful way to kick back and prepare for the cruise.

The staff are really nice, the ambience great, and the food. And some nice pareos, different from what I saw elsewhere.

I'm going back on the PG again in April, no pre-cruise this time. Enjoy your trip to Manihi!

Wendy:

Thanks for your response. I plan to dive on Manihi - just wondered if I should do afew extra dives on the PG. Since youve been on the PG before can you tell me what excursions you particularly enjoyed and anything that I should pack taht I might not think of (for Manihi or PG)? Can you tell me if it is worth the additional cost to upgrade from an overwater to premium overwater bungalow?
Also - I have an Email from Air Tahiti Nui that says if you have an international flight then the same baggage weight restrictions apply to interisland flights - this seems to contradict what I have read from others on this website - did you have trouble with your luggage when you went to Manihi?
Thanks again for answering - I am looking forward to a great time.

As to the over-water bungalows, if you can afford it, go for it! I did not, and our "hut" was facing the lagoon, on the beach, with our own private porch with a hammock on it. The tradewinds blew through our room at night, no air-conditioning needed. We loved it, it was the nicest room I've ever stayed in.

So, if you don't want to spend the money, don't worry, you won't feel too deprived.

On the other hand, you can snorkel directly from the steps of your room, instead of having to walk out through the coral several hundred feet like I did.

As well, there is a mosquito problem in Manihi, and they sprayed every night while I was there. If you worry about insecticides, not sure if it would be better over the water, or if the mosquitoes would be worse. Did not get bitten particularly, but that was because of the spraying.

Do not remember any luggage problems going to Manihi, except that it's a small-ish plane, and our carry-on luggage may have had to go in the hold. The normal kind of thing you encounter with a commuter jet.

Hope you have a great time,
Wendy

tahitian bday,

Just re-read your question about the overwater bungalows. I can only assume that the "premium" bungalows are the ones that are farther out in the lagoon, and therefore have better access to the edge of the reef where all the great snorkelling is. If so, it might be worth upgrading. It would also be further from the restaurant, bar and pool.

But wherever you are, I'm sure you'll like it.
Wendy

In some of our past comments we talked about taking along Tote and Floats.
These are floating blow up high quality mats. If you do have one make sure you take a good quality air pump with you. They are very difficult to blow up. If you have something less expensive and not as big you might be ok. We did not use them on Tahaa because they furnish the lounge chairs but you really need something if you go to the beach on Bora Bora. Other wise you will lay on your towel.
We did not do the wave runners, but a lot of people who planned on going cancelled when they found out you have to stay in a group and can't just go anywhere you want. Kind of follow the leader.
I am so glad we did this trip by cruise ship Paul Gauguin instead of going to resorts. When we were at the Beachcommer in Tahiti one member of our party had a $18.50 hamburger!!
It is a lot less expensive, you only unpack once, and you get to see a lot of islands, and no hassle making air arrangements.
We had decided before we left home that we did not want to spend a fortune on excurrsions. We did Raiatea river tour. (Could have passed)$65.00 each. Bora Bora 4x4 (GREAT $68.00), Moorea bus tour ($35.00 good),and the Paul Gauguin tour (FREE and good).
If you are flying into LAX be ready for a shock at the international terminal. It will take at least 45 minutes at ATN ticket counter, and it will take you about 1 hour to go through security check. The line was OVER 2 blocks long.
When you are headed home you might see a store, at the airport, in Tahiti that is selling pineapples 4/$20.00. They say you are ok with them, but we had 3 couple buy boxes of them. 1 couple lost them all at US customs, 1 couple lost 2 and 1 couple lost 1 pineapple. I would recommend not buying any Tahitian pineapples and trying to bring them home.
We were on Air Tahiti Nui "Moorea" going both ways. I unfortuntly was seated in 26A and the head phone jax was broken and they did not work. 27D had condensation dripping on them through out the flight. Very nice clean planes that just were put into service, but they really need to fine tune them.
That is it for now. Let me know if you have other questions I can answer.
