as I have more time to read more reviews, some cruise reviews note that there is a lot of motion, and that the PG and TP can't go in the calmer lagoons because of their size; we will visit FP for the first time in June, 2006; we are very excited but totally torn between the ease of a cruise and a land vacation where one is packing, unnpacking and flying/ferry around; but I get very motion sick; I will definitely be on medication (dramamine works just fine for me in the Caribbean), but will I be ok on either the TP or the PG using dramamine? I hate to spend 10 days not feeling well; one reviewer said they felt the motion all the time, even when the boat was anchored. can anyone clear things up for us? thanks--we are appreciative of any advice you can give- franco

TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.

We spent two weeks on the PG embarking August 21, 2004. (We did a back to back cruise.) I have a tendency towards motion sickness but with a few precautions taken had no problem on the PG. Our cabin was low and towards the center of the ship (421). The first night when the ship moves to Raiatea and Wednesday night when she travels from Bora Bora to Moorea are two times that you should just plan on taking some form of medication to be sure that you'll do fine. I use Bonine and they have the non-brand name form of that medication on board and it is free for the asking.

I'm with Kathy on this. I too pick a low cabin, mid-ship (surprise, we're in 421 in three weeks, Kathy!)
I have seen people wearing "scope" patches, and sea bands. I always have Bonine with me, just to be sure. I have only used it once, and that was during a storm as the PG raced towards Bora Bora from Taha'a.
I am very prone to seasickness. But I have never had a problem on the PG, even the rolling trip to Moorea from BB. But my safety blanket are those drugs always at hand!

well, that reassures me for the smoothness: it's usually pretty calm, and when it's not, the drugs work. Now we just have to decide which cruise and if we prefer that to land only; also I noticed that neither of you opted for the balcony; was it because of location (higher up) or cost (much higher up) or both??? so many things to think about- thanks, franco

we've been on the TP twice, never had any problems with motion. I do take bonine for a couple days just to be safe, but my husband never takes anything. I think that cruisrin is very cost effective, and I like not haveing to pack/unpack. We did do three days pre cruise on Moorea and one day post on Tahiti, I would recommend youdo some kind of pre and post cruise stay( not through the cruiseline, they charge way too much)

Wendy and her husband had been to FP twice before my husband and I went last year. She answered many of my posts as I was planning our trip. Since excellent snorkeling is a priority for us Wendy's prior experience on both the PG and Manihi was one of the reasons we chose that atoll for a post-cruise stay. We chose the lower cabin mostly for the cost savings that helped us extend our vacation to a back to back cruise. We figured once we were that far away from home we wanted to stay as long as we could.

snorkeling is a really big priority with us, too. but I heard the best snorkeling in fp were the coral gardens at the sofitel motu on bb and the sheraton on moorea. I had hoped to do both of those during the cruise on shore trips and probably stay 3 or 4 nights at the sheraton moorea, too. The PG is almost affordable if we do the non=balcony; but we have to do a ten night, because we have to go in mid June (2006)because of my husband's vacation time; the TP is quite a value, compared to the pg; then, I think maybe we'll just do all land; we are confused, but it is fun to research; we love to travel and have been all over, but not fp--thanks for your advice- franco

We stayed at both the Sheraton in Moorea and the Sofitel Motu in Bora Bora. The BEST snorkling was at the Sheraton in Moorea. We seen Moray eels, octopus, stingrays, and a ton of fish. The coral at the Sheraton is really beautiful. The coral at the Sofitel Motu was not as colorful and alot was killed off. It is just starting to come back. But if I had to choose, I would choose the Sheraton, hands down.

franco. Remember trying to compare TP and PG is like trying to compare apples and oranges. You need to study both very carefully and see if what is included in PG fare and what is charged for in TP fare work for your needs.
