Does anyone know where the Paul Gauguin anchors in Moorea.I think it was in Cooks or Opunohu bay but I'm not sure.

TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

Cooks Bay. It is very easy to rent a car right at the parking lot by the dock if you want to take a self guided tour around Moorea. Or you can ask one of the people from the boutique onboard the PG for a voucher for free transportation to and from The Black Pearl Gem Company's main store. You can walk to Le Petite Village from there for a little shopping and then back to their store for the ride back to Cooks Bay. There's also a nice cooler with free Coke and Hinano beer and restrooms at the store. And then there are the pearls!

When we were there 2 weeks ago, it was anchored in Opunohu Bay. It was a Tuesday afternoon. Maybe it anchors in different bays from time to time?

Thanks for the update, Patti. The 3 PG cruises we've done all anchored in Cooks Bay. There is always something new to learn. Perhaps Albert should have his travel agent check to see if it's known where the PG will be anchored for his cruise. (It would only really make a difference if he is trying to arrange a meeting for an independent excursion.)

I actually wanted to visit the beachcomber,we were there on our honeymoon, and wanted to maybe stop by the sheraton and do some snorkeling if this is possible. What kind of excursions did you do on Moorea?I know we were only going to have not even 2 days so we want to make the best of it.

Well Opunohu Bay would put you closer to both the Beachcomber and Sheraton. We liked the "Lagoon Discovery with Snorkeling" excursion on Moorea so much that we did it on two of our cruises. It would take you past both of those hotel properties. While many people rate Dr. Poole's excursion highly we were on one that saw no dolphins so it was a disappointment for us.

Does that snorkeling excursion take you between the two small motus that are just past the beachcomber? We also went to those motus twice because we liked it so much the first time.If you didn't want to do the excursion with lunch, you could just take the boat from the beachcomber dock and it would come pick you up in 2 hours.Do you prefer a cruise to staying at a resort?I like the idea of stopping at the different islands, but I hate the thought of only having the 2 short days in Moorea. We could have stayed at the Sheraton in Moorea for a week for close to the same price as the cruise, but then that did not include the meals you get on the PG.I just know it is going to go by too fast.We did take the 2 nights post cruise at the intercontinental Tahiti so that will give us a little more time. I just felt like we didn't see enough of Moorea on our honeymoon because we were only there for 4 nights before we went to Bora.I certainly have not heard anything negative about the Gauguin.

Our trip last June began with a forced overnight at the LAX Hilton compliments of RSSC (a great way to break up our trip and get used to the jet lag). Then we paid for a 2 night pre-cruise stay at the Tahiti Beachcomber. It was a 10 day cruise and we followed it with a 3 night post-cruise at the Moorea Pearl Resort. In our book it was the best of both worlds. The time on the PG (we did not have a balcony) costs less per day than the time on land (we stayed in OWB's at the Pearl Resorts) once you factor in some meals, but it was nice to have the extra time over there.
In 2004 we did a 3 night post-cruise stay at the Manihi Pearl Resort. Due to the early check-in and late check-out they gave us we got a really good value there.

The anchoring place depends on the weather. The people at the Club Bali Hai said the first choice is Opunohu, but they will go into Cooks for more shelter if necessary. I think it costs them higher mooring fees to be in Cooks.
Note: if in Cooks, the tenders drop you right at the TOP Dive, which is on most Moorea maps. If in Opunohu, you tender to the octagonal church.

They changed the location last month. It will now be in Opunohu Bay. Closer to the Beachcomber and Le Petit Village.
