We'll be sailing on the Aranui this year, and would like to know about shopping opportunities for crafts, cloth, pearls, etc. We have some info from this and other forums, but would like to see some specifics on what to expect at Tuamotu stops, and other islands - actual stores? Folding tables on the dock? Village shops? Sample prices? - Stuff like that. Thanks to all who have already shared so much valuable info with us FP rookies.

We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.

Take the amount of XFP cash you may plan on spending. Exchange at the bank at the airport on arrival.
If you take travelers checks take them in amounts
of 100. They charge to convert each check.
If you have time in Papeete go to one of the large supermarkets and buy a case (24)of bottled water large size to take on board with you.
You will find many places on the trip to buy
crafts,tapa,and carvings. A good wooden bowl may go as high as 125000 xfp. You will find loose pearls for sale on Takapoto. Do some research on pearls before you buy any.
The food is OK on the Aranui but would not win any prizes (on a one to five stars scale maybe a **
The best advise we would give you is follow the instructions of the wonderful crew always.

Thanks so much for the information. This is our 1st trip to FP and we are traveling with 2 other couples. We'll spend a week post cruise in Moorea and Bora Bora. My grandmother was born in Tahiti and I have so wanted to visit her birthplace. I'll continue to monitor this wonderful board!!!

Thanks for the info. We're spending four days at Te Tiare after the cruise. Any advice there?

Looking forward to meeting your group on the Aranui. We'll be two days in Tahiti at the Mandarin Hotel prior to sail. Lots of good tips on this forum.

We're booked on the Nov 4th sail and are also spending 2 nites prior at the Mandarin. We're doing Moorea and Bora Bora 3 nites each post cruise. Centainly looking forward to meeting you as well. It will be fun!!!

http://www.farehamara.com and haven't stayed in a hotel for years. Take cash or large amount travelers checks and go several blocks from the Mandarin to
the Bank of Tahiti the next day after you arrive to exchange your money (take your passport to the bank with you) Feel free to email me with any other questions you may have.

Manny, Te Tiare is very nice. If you take the boat shuttle into Fare there are a few shops and restaurants that you can visit. Also try renting a car and driving around. It's an easy drive with nice stops along the way - including some marae and the Huahine pearl farm (you park near the dock and there is a boat that runs. If you check out the Huahine section of this forum there are alot more suggestions about what to do. Holte has quite a bit of information about the island and things to do.

Also look at the trip reports by Vaitape - she has stayed at the Te Tiare I think at least 3 times and has alot to offer in the way of advice.
