Hi Nancie,
I still have to book a place to stay. Mandarin is on the expensive side. If you are familiar with Papeete, tell me where we can have the beer. I will get to the place. Also say the time. Late afternoon would be best.

Bora Bora Cruises
TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

As to shopping during the Aranui cruise:
The ship is a working freighter adn I loved it. When we took the Aranui 2 a few years back, they only had a tiny shop for essentials.

The Marquesans had their tables set up with crafts near the pier or in the villages. If you like something, buy it. Nobody else will have made the exact same thing and you won't go back that soon, I assume. I regretted not buying more wood carvings on Ua Huka. The selection of tapa cloth in Fatu Hiva was very limited. It's a painstaking process to make it.

On Takopoto you can buy pearls.

Cloth is much easier to obtain in Papeete.

Kitegypsy you posted on an "old" thread, see the date on the top right of each reply... 2006, that's prob why the calendar doesn't match.

What a great read (and I love your sketches). Wow, you really did have a bad fall. I had one myself on Bora Bora in 2003 (I did a face-plant in lava rock and needed stitches...but I had mine with no anaesthetic...OUCH). In spite of starting on antibiotics right away, I got pockets of pus all along my nose & cheeks after a day or so, but I was lucky they went away with my double-dose antibiotics. Sorry to hear you had a much worse time of it. I hope you've fully recovered by now. Thanks for the blog!

That is a GREAT blog and GORGEOUS sketches and watercolors! I had the pleasure of meeting Elain and Sophie on the check-in line at the LAX airport, when they noticed my knocked-down dog kennel on our luggage cart and figured out, from my dog stories, that it must be me, on my way to bring home our beach dog.

What an awful accident to have in paradise! I hope you are fully recovered now.
