My wife and I are wondering if the 4x4 tour on Moorea offers anything significanty different than what we'd get out of just renting a car for the day and driving around the island ourselves. I appreciate that we may not get that 'off road' adventure, but we've done the 4x4 tours a number of times on trips in Mexico etc.. and though they were fun, we didn't see any beaches or scenery that we couldn't have seen on our own. Thoughts/advice?

We did a van tour of Moorea, so it wasn't anymore than we could have seen by car. However, our guide was quite colorful and interesting and she gave us lots of information about the island.
If it's anything like Tahiti, the half day tours aren't much more than you could do yourself, but the full day ones go lots of places you might not find yourself.
I'm for self guiding if you are adventurous enough.

Hmm...that caused me to think...if we were to do the self guided thing, is there such a thing as a map with sites highlighted or something?
We recently added Moorea for two days on the end of our trip in November and the thing I definitely wanted to do was tour the island. We have Jan Prince's latest book and I'm sure it will provide alot of information. I just haven't taken the time to study the part on Moorea yet.
It is my understanding that the latest version of Love Affair was filmed on Moorea. True? Can you go see that place where character played by Katherine Hepburn lives? It is soo beautiful.

I think the only thing that you miss if you rent a car vs. booking a 4x4 tour is a trip up to the waterfall. I don't think you can get up there with a car. You also miss the commentary of the guide, which, depending on the guide, is pretty interesting.
Our 4x4 tour went to the distillery, the Belvedere, and the waterfall. We also did a bit of off-roading into a pineapple plantation, which you probably would not want to do in a car.

Do both! We went on Albert's 4WD safari. They took us to the top of one mountain that can't be accessed by the public, and can only be reached by 4WDs. The rental contracts there (we used Europcar) specifically prohibit you from driving to the waterfalls. We had a great time with Albert's; including all the free samples of liquors he got us at the distillery. Also: instead of booking through your hotel, call Albert's direct. (They're advertised everywhere on Moorea...) It was $15 per person less than the same tour booked through the hotel. They also had a great Shark & Ray tour.
