Most (if not all) resorts provide snorkel gear, but I don't recall seeing snorkel vests as part of the gear they provide.

As you will see if a few posts - if you can, bring your own gear. The Beachcomber has equipment free to guests but, it is a little on the old and used side - plus they will open the desk at 8:00 - well the window shade is lifted at 8 but you may have to wait for someone to actually show up to give the gear to you. The big bummer had to return the gear by 5:00 that same day.
If you have your own - bring it!

Definitely bring your own mask and snorkel with the anti-water device on top. The two hotels we stayed at Sheraton Moorea and Sofitel Motu) had masks but they were really worn out looking. The mask at the Sofitel leaded. However, both hotels had fins (the Sofitel Motu delivered their fins to your room and the Sheraton Moorea had a desk where you could check them out all weekend), and these were just fine. I advise you to buy some anti-fogging liquid since masks really fog up and ruin your view of the fish and coral. That was the one item I didn't have but wished I had it.

Thanks. If we purchase our own equiptment and only use their fins....do these have to be returned each day or can we just use them for the 3 days we're there?

Also check what hours the equipment is available. On Sunday morning, I asked at the Moorea Village reception to borrow snorkeling gear and they said the "activities desk" including free motu tour is closed. I wish I had known, I would have picked it up on Sat evening instead. This was also annoying since at a small hotel like the MV, the snorkeling gear is probably locked in a drawer at the reception desk and it wouldn't have killed them to open it up. We left MOnday morning, we had wanted to do the shark and ray tour and we were told that it doesn't go on Sunday and Monday.
In general, Sunday and Monday seem to be dead days on Moorea at least, Tiki Village is also closed at this time. Maybe the larger resorts have 7 day service?

mlm,
We took snorkel vest along with good gear .. but left our fins at home just to reduce the packing space needed. At both the beachcomber moorea and pearl beach bora bora we were able to check out fins the first day of our visit and keep them for our entire stay. I would also suggest you take anti-fogger for your mask. We did at the advice of rodjune. It was one of our most used pre-trip purchases ... other than swimsuits. Thanks rodjune!!

Any suggestions on reasonably priced snorkel masks? Are there any particular brands or features to look for? Someone mentioned Costco as a source for pretty cheap well made snorkel gear/masks.

Skip Costco/Walmart etc. if you're going to get a mask get a real mask. Go to http://www.leisurepro.com they sell real dive equipment and you can get a quality mask for around $20.

By all means bring your own GOOD mask and a DRY snorkle..makes it much nicer. As for fins, we bring our huge split fins..takes up much to much space and weight in the suitcase but I have a hard foot to fit and the places where we stay don't provide fins. You might check with a Scuba shop and see if they would rent you the equipment for a week.
