Has anyone rented scooters instead of a car in Moorea / Bora Bora / Tahaa? Is it very expensive? Is it safe to drive one on the islands? It would seem like more of a fun way to see the islands, and without some of the hassels you can have with renting cars like the dealers trying to say you scratched it.
Also, what about Jet Skis? In Bora Bora or Tahaa this seems like it would be the most fun way to see the islands. Would there be a place to park a jet ski nearby towns, beaches or other hotels?

I rented on Moorea and my wife and I both loved it and would do it again. We didn't think it was unsafe and found the freedom to be great @ $40 - 50 a day. Others on here will tell you it's not safe so I guess it comes to a personal choice. Jet ski rental will cost you a lot if you are just wanting to tool around and see the islands and stop in other towns to look around. I think they ran something in the realm of $60 - 80 per half hour.

I rented a scooter in Moorea and it cost about $50 to $60 for four hours. To go around Moorea non-stop will take about 2 hours. Be forewarned that the weather in FP is unpredictable. We left in the afternoon while it was very hot and the sky was clear - when we reached southwest area of the island (around Haapiti), it rained buckets on us. It was near impossible to keep riding and my wife and I found shelter under a tree until it let up a bit. Other than that, it was an awesome way to see the island.
We tried to rent a scooter on BB (I think there is only one place to rent a scooter on the island) but they were out and we had to settle for a car. I am actually glad we got a car because the roads on BB can have some serious potholes across the width of the road and some portions of the road are unpaved. An inattentive rider could easily lay the scooter down. The trip around BB is about an hour non-stop.
You don't have to worry about other drivers/riders on the road, they were all considerate and won't buzz close by you. Have a great (and safe) time.

Renting a scooter on Moorea in near Suicide. They drive like mad men on Moorea. The other islands are OK. On Moorea for the extra $20 per day for safety is the way to go. I have seen some really bad wrecks in Moorea. I think the last one I heard was a Honeymoon Couple riding on a scooter and she hit a bump on the road, her thongs got caught under the scooter and snapped off a few toes. As far as Jet Ski's you can rent them, they cost a lot and you can not ride them on your own. You always have a guide with you.

Well Andy you just described the very reason there was a problem on the scooter...a female was driving.

Gee wiz, go to F.P. and swim with a pack of sharks while they’re in a feeding frenzy, and then someone looses a few toes on a scooter, go figure.

Too funny.
Thanks for the opinions. We plan to get a jet ski tour at some point in time, even if a guide must go with us. I would like a scooter, for the more seenic and relaxing drive, but not if there are a lot of other crazy drivers. having owned a scooter and driven cycles I am confident in my ability, but I don't really want to be worrying about other drivers and unexpected potholes.
Hmmm. Maybe a horse instead!

Go for the Miki Miki jetski tour in Bora Bora. I'm not a sit down jetski rider or guided tour person in any way but I enjoyed the tour. It was one of the highlights of our trip. See pics at: http://www.submarineaz.com in the gallery.

Rook, it's the tropics not Cleveland where pot holes abound...the road itself on Moorea is in good shape, but if you head up to the point over the bays becareful which road you take one is paved and the other is dirt/clay (but does give a more scenic route).

Potholes?, crazy drivers?....and yet some of you are saying it's HIGHLY recommended to rent a car or scooter in FP??? Can you imagine doing this at night???, which we didn't do as those roads are pretty much pitch black! We rented a car and we did see some pretty crazy drivers while on Moorea. On BB it was OK, but they're right, the road is a little more "bumpy."
