We did drive the scooter at night and found the roads to be fine. The darkness was a problem but at that time they also were installing street lights all along the road, don't know where the progress is as of now though. I must also be a crazy driver cause I didn't notice.

You did not notice the crazy drivers in Moorea? I have driven all over the world and they compare with the crazys in Paris and New York. The worst part about driving at night are the dogs. They will chase you down the street or just jump out in front of you.

No I actually thought people did pretty well looking out for each other since passing seems to always be an option. I was aware of the dog issue from reading on the board but honestly never ran into a problem with them in the day or night time, and we drove from the North side of the island back to the Pearl at night. Like I said, maybe I'm just one of the crazys. Did you notice if they had more of the street lights up last time you were there?

My wife and I just returned and I don't think we saw any street lights on Moorea. But at night, we only went from the Beachcomber to Alfredo's and to Linareva. I have no idea about the other parts of the island. We didn't notice any dogs at night either but saw plenty during the day running around the road.

There were streetlights between the Beachcomber and Le Petit Village in March 2004; we'd walk to restaurants in the village and back after dark, without a problem.
In 2003 we were at the Pearl and there were NO streetlights, which did not stop us from walking (granted, we were probably idiots) from the Pearl to Le Sud and back again. At some points, it was indeed pitch black and we'd wait for a car to go by, scope out the side of the road in the headlights, and then make a mad dash ahead while we could see (I repeat: we were probably idiots, but it was wayyyy more fun than being responsible California taxpayers). I was more worried about stepping on the crabs than I was about the dogs; people had mentioned the roaming dogs before. Fortunately for my husband, we never encountered any (he had to promise to be the first to be eaten before I would walk the road at night).
We brought a flashlight with us for the 2004 trip and-- voila!-- there were streetlights, so we put the flashlight back in the suitcase.

While I think a scooter is a fun way to see the island, it can be fraught with some danger. In fact, the woman who rented the scooter tried to talk us out of it and told us there is a bad scooter accident every day on Moorea. Our travel agency (Islands in the Sun) even warned us not to get a scooter while in FP. Just to fill you in on some more info.

Too funny Zoe, we stayed at the Pearl 2003 and know exactly about the walk in the dark and the crabs...great memories.

The streetlights must go from the Beachcomber to Moorea Village now, because we had lights from MV to LePetit Village last month.
We were told that the new tourist tax is paying for some of these improvements. I know it's probably a safety issue, but it kind of messes up the ambiance of the islands.
There were even street lights in the little village Rotoava on Fakarava that extended out on either side of the village, but not all the way to the airport.
We got a kick out of watching locals drive down the lighted roads. They didn't bother to turn on their headlights. Hopefully they did when they got on the unlighted portions.
