Trying to plan out our spending. How much should we expect to spend each day on food?

If you do a search on these forums, you'll find lots of very specific posts on prices. What you spend depends on yourselves, of course, which island you are on, if you drink, where you are staying, etc.
We like a good meal Most of the resorts list breakfast costs on their websites (2000-2800 cfp/person for continental/American breakfasts) and the costs for set dinners, lunches, etc. When we ate at restaurants on Moorea and Bora Bora, we found that, with drinks, our meals ran from 8000-15000 cfp total. There are ways to eat for less and ways to eat for more. We've enjoyed roulotte meals and been delighted there for around 2500-3000 cfp. We've had lunch at resorts for 5000-7000 cfp and we've picked up poisson cru from a local grocery (around 400 cfp) or grabbed a burger and coke at a roadside snack (500 cfp).
It all depends....

I would plan on a minimum of $100 per couple per day. The upper end of the price range depends on you -- see above post

The way I expressed FP food prices to friends was that three cheeseburgers, fries, and cokes were about $50. That should help you scale your expectations.

It also depends where you buy them. 2 years ago at the Sofitel Marara, a cheeseburger & fries, no Coke was $20 for one.

A typical day for us (2) was to buy Continental breakfast items at the local magasin (a combination of a carton of Rotui juice, croissants, fresh pineapple, yogurt, baguettes) for about $12 total, and also pick up a casse croute and pate for lunch at $12 or eat out with a simple lunch of poisson cru and baguette and soft beverage for about $30, and eat out for dinner for about $75 to $150, depending on the restaurant and what we ordered. So, I agree with Ed that $100 is the bare minimum for two people and maybe an average of around $150 on a typical day. If you're truly on a budget and you have access to a larger magasin or the supermarkets on Moorea or Tahiti, you could eat for two for probably around $40 to $50 day. Most travelers might have a difficult time going this budget route the whole time.

Agree with everybody that it just depends on what you're going to do. The only real cheap eating is if you go the route of going to the markets and stocking up on various things. If you're planning to go to the restaurants or even the fast food joints, it's not going to be cheap. A burger or sandwich is going to run you about $5 - $6 USD. At most of the restaurants, some of the meals are about $15 - $16 USD and up. A majority of the menu will usually be close to $30 USD or more.

A good approach, in our experience, is to get the bed and breakfast deal with the hotel. We did that and their breakfast buffets were excellent. Lots of great fruit and breads and cooked stuff too. We would eat ourselves to near exploding and we would be pretty much full until supper, thus relegating lunch to a clif bar on the run, if we needed one. That left the whole day for activities or rest, which ever we desired.

I would get the meal plan for breakfast at least. Just breakfast can get expensive if you have the buffet everyday. The buffets cost around 25$ per person.Maybe even more.

$150 per person per day for food AND purchased activities (Moorea). Go to $200 a day if you will be in Bora dining mostly at one of the very upscale hotels.
You can, of course, spend more if you want . . . but after the first three big dinners, you sort of wind up skipping a lot of meals.
