I dove in Rangiroa in late 2001 plus one dive in Bora Bora. The Rangiroa pass can be an incredible shark dive if timed correctly - 50+ large black tip reef sharks, huge wrasse, etc. Problem is the dive shops are on set schedules, unlike Fiji where the dives are timed to the currents. Outside the pass typical sloping reefs with fair amount of tropicals and occasional sharks, rays and turtles plus huge schools of sennet (sp?) and barracudas. When you dive the pass it ends at the "aquarium" which is very pleasant for both divers and snorkelers.
The one dive in Bora Bora was outside the pass with some wierd French divemaster to see lemon sharks - and that we did. He enticed four large 10 to 15'sharks with some fish scraps. We hovered above as they passed by many times, but they were reluctant to hit the scraps. After about 15 minutes we explored the reef, which was nothing too special.
Overall the diving was good, with a good chance of large pelagics. Not near the dive quality of Fiji or Papua New Guinea, but as long as you are traveling with a lady Tahiti is hard to beat.

Just got back from Moorea last night. There were blacktips, many lemons and grey sharks. It was like shark soup. A good dive is shark valley.... it is the ocean side of the motu off the Beachcomber. Don't freak you non divers...never saw a shark in the lagoons while snorkeling. The water was gin clear. I thought the shark feeding would be contrived, but I enjoyed being within 10 feet of lemons while they were eating. Also saw turtles often. As a caribbean diver it was a nice change to see the totally different pacific fishes. Happy Diving!
