Going to BB, Moorea, Rangi for Honeymoon in July. Will be doing alot of diving but have never owned a real underwater camera. Are the disposalbes crap? Picture quality any good?

If you're snorkeling, the underwater disposable cameras work fine and take good pictures. If you're diving, most disposable cameras will only withstand the pressure at a depth about 20-30'. Dives in Tahiti generally go 60-80'. You can find decent underwater cameras under $200.00.

GT is right. Further, the quality of the disposable underwater cameras is not great, but the pictures are not "cr*p" either.

We have used Fuji dsiposables at 18 metres and they still worked, of course this could have been a fluke and as they have no flash the pictures are not great, but they are good enough to remind of our dives.

When I was in FP last month, I was surprised to see that they were selling disposables that were rated good down to 25 meters (or roughly 75 feet). There were versions with and without flash! I was intrigued, but the cost, in the hotel shops, was quite prohibitive- close to 50 bucks.
I wanted to look them up on the web once home again, but of course I cannot remember the name of the maker (it wasn't a biggie like Kodak- I have a vague feeling they were of Aussie manufacture?) Of course, I haven't a clue what the quality is.
I just snorkeled on this last trip, being thwarted in my diving endeavors by a lung problem. We used several Kodak Sport and Water disposables- results can be seen here: http://ktravers.smugmug.com Note: the U/W pictures were tweaked in Photoshop to rid them of the blue "haze" inevitable in them.
We also have an Ikelite camera housing for a cheapo camera, and a strobe, but we haven't brought them along to FP in the 5 years we've been going. We like to travel as light as possible, and I also don't like the idea of taking along a more expensive (albeit only slightly) piece of equipment. With all the bouncing around in the small zodiacs we've dived from, I'm just happy that I don't get banged up on the ride to the dive sites and during the ignominious hauling back on board after the dive (no ladders!). I'd rather not worry about any camera equipment.
That said, I've always thought about getting a little more seriously into it, getting a real camera set-up, getting real comfortable with it and taking it along to chronicle some of the stupendous diving I know is there. We'll see...

Another option is to rent a camera here in the states. That is what I was going to do (cost was about 75.00)until a friend lent me his. If you are going diving you might want to consider this option. For snorkeling it may not be worth it unless you are going to take lots of pictures. I took about 10 rolls of pictures. Used a roll each time I went snorkeling or diving. It would have cost me more than that in disposasble cameras and the pictures would not have been as good at least the diving pictures anyway.

Ray,
I just got back from Moorea in March. We brought several 35mm SLR's loaded with various film but also bought a cheap disposable for snorkling/diving and the pictures turned out much better than we expected. We bought a Kodak. Not sure if there is more than one kind but ours was blue, 36 exposures and good to 35 feet. We got it at Target for about $10. Our only regret is that we didn't buy a few more. By the time we went on our dive we were almost out of film. Still, the quality was easily worth $10+ if your like us and don't think you want to invest in a regualr underwater camera. There are definitly things happening under water there that you'll want photos of. The islands also give rise to some great black and white shots.

I left a post that just disappeared in regards to this thread. I also included a link to a photo my wife shot underwater on a dive around 60 foot deep with a $200 sony W5 point and shoot and a $140 dollar underwater housing to sho wwhat a cheap camera outfit can do.. Anyways, here's the link to the photo. If this quality is ok to ya, then you can reproduce it for $340 or so - plus the camera can used all the time above water.. Good luck!

Keep in mind this was our first attempt at underwater photography on dives and this photo has been highly compressed for web download..

My husband is the camera man in our family and he has a plastic underwater housing for his regular digital camera--pictures are great, but as mentioned above, they can use some "tweaking" if they are too blue or the flash doesn't reach that far. His best pictures came in Huahine when I held his arm and lead him around the coral heads and he didn't have to maneuver around, but click away! He loved it, and I loved it--saved me from shouting through my snorkel to point something out.

If you decide to do the disposable route, buy the Fuji's and have them processed so you get a CD-Rom of the pics. You'll be able to fix the coloring issues if the pics were taken in shallow water on a sunny day.
