Novice Diving in Rangiroa

My wife and I are certified scuba divers, but don't have a lot of experience. I've heard that the drift diving in the passes are the highlight of Rangi diving, but that this is for very experienced divers. Has anyone been on good dives around Rangi that could be handled by novice divers?

The majority of the dives at Rangiroa are for the advanced diver, but you can arrange to dive inside the lagoon as some people did while I was there. The real action is outside the lagoon and in the pass. Depending on the moon, the tidal surge affects the current around the pass. Further outside the pass the seas are affected mainly by wind and swell direction. Except for the surface chop, the currents away from the pass are managable by most novice divers.
If the dives aren't within your ability, stick with the snorkeling thru the pass with Pascal & Cosetta. Most people find it as incredible and much more relaxed than the diving.
Good luck.
By the way, I'll be back on April 2 for the week.

You might also consider how you like to descend. If you are used to and only comfortable with descending down an anchor line, then drift diving is more difficult. Usually you have to descend on your own and for someone like me who has trouble clearing, this can be quite a challenge.

tk and Carol S. -- Thanks for the replies. I think we'll do the drift snorkel in the pass and do some diving in the lagoon to help build the skills up.

If you are going to another island first you can do as many dives as possible there before you get to Rangiroa to prepare. With this recent experience you may feel comfortable diving the pass. I have personally seen a few stressful situations with people in the pass so you do need to feel very comfortable before you do it. The dive operators may suggest a check out dive in the lagoon to confirm your skills too.

We were novice divers last year when we went to Rangiroa (did our certificate dive in 12 feet in a local lake the day before we left). We dove with "Six Passengers" there and were very comfortable. I explained my hesitancy and they were very good about diving at our level. We dove three mornings. The first day we dove just outside the pass -my husband and I alone with a divemaster, the second and third days we did easy dives through the pass, each one a little more technical. Dove with dolphins, turtles, barracuda, saw the wall of sharks, etc. They said you can do it easy or you can do it hard and were very helpful to us as novice divers.

Hi! I'm neither a novice nor advanced diver. Can anyone compare the pass dive in Rangi to teh currents in Cozumel? I handled Coz pretty well.

I got certified the week before going to FP (just 4 check out dives). I did 1 dive in Tahiti and 2 in Bora Bora before doing the Rangiroa pass dive. I was a little nervous going because I read it was a difficult dive. The currents will pull you, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle (I'm neither a poor nor great swimmer, just average.)

I did the pass dive in Rangiroa twice.I just finished my checkout dives in Moorea and Rangiroa, and had completed the NAUI scuba course in the classroom and pool 3 weeks before our honeymoon. I showed them my paperwork and logbook from the 4 dives I did in Moorea and Bora, and they had no problem taking me.It was not a difficult dive in my opinion as long as you decompress on the way down and just relax.I followed the divemaster's instructions and was fine.As soon as we got in the water a dozen or so reef sharks came up to investigate.WE were in over 160 feet of water. The visibility was amazing. There were fish everywhere,I was really blown away by it.No fear at all,I was just in awe. There were sharks everywhere below us.I seen giant manta rays glide right under me.Huge walls of barracuda.Schools of eagle rays. Then as we approached the pass the current just kinda carries you enough so you don't have to kick.As you glide through the pass there are all species of fish passing you on all sides.Just relax and remember your skills and follow the divemasters instructions, they know what they are doing. It's not to be missed.
