Hey way2old! In July, I dove at the Intercontinental in Moorea where you will be staying. I only have 10 dives under my belt and my first shark dive was their at the ICB. We went pretty much straight out from the resort about 200 feet from the surf in about 60 feet of water. The dive master had about a pound of Tuna in a stainless steel canister that had holes in it. This caused about 14 black tips to circle around us. It was a great experience and not scarry at all. I interpretted them as curious but timid sharks. There were a few times that I could have reached out and touched them but the dive master advised not to. They are one of the most beatiful animals I have ever seen. Kind of like fighter jets under water. Perfectly designed. Let me know if you want to know more info on my experience. Anyone who is scared, really shouldn't be. There is plenty of food for them in paradise.

I was wary of the idea of sharks too, but once I actually seeing them, it was no problem at all, I was totally relaxed. They are beautiful to watch. (And I was REALLY freaked out about sharks when I first started diving, so this was a big leap for me) That said, I would never go on a shark-feeding dive. I saw plenty without having to feed them, especially on the Tiki dive. And I don't want them to assocaite me with food!

Heidi, Thanks for your reply and thoughts on diving with sharks. Everyone I talk to that has done it, tells me that it is way cool and to quit worrying. way2old

way2old,
Excellent comments above and IMO right on target.
I've encountered these babies both snorkeling and diving and I continue to be fascinated with them. Their graceful movement and beauty underwater is simply unparallel in the sea world.
I love the dolphins, but the feeling of excitement and exhilaration when you're in the water with a pack of sharks can't be described, you need to experience it.
On our last trip I was able to get some awesome pictures of these babies up close and personal.
If you haven't seen my shark pictures on this forum take a look see. Find them in the album area under "Tahiti, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Moorea - Aug 04".
There were probably 30 or 40 of them circling us, and they were so close I could have touched them.
Simply amazing experience, I will always consider the Shark Feeding excursions to be the high point of my visits to F.P.

Thomas, Your pictures are AWESOME !!! Thanks for the reply and the encouragement. I am going to do it, but I'm sure the first roll or stride into the water with sharks will make my heart skip a few beats. way2old
