When purchasing a dive computer at Scuba.com, I was asked where I was going. When I replied, FP, he said to buy a "Reef Hook" ($14.95) that it was a "must". I did, and now wonder if I will carry something that I will not need or not be allowed.

It is used, supposedly, to hook onto coral reef, then inflate BCD to pull you away and up from the reef.

I leave June 13th and possibly will not get a reply before then, but would like to know more about it.

Lazyace,

Your dive shop sold you a bunch of BS.

Unless you're diving a pass and want to hold on there is no need to secure to the reef. Plus it certainly causes damage to the reef if done incorrectly.

I've dove the islands of tahiti and the tuamotus for the past 10 years and have never needed to hook onto the reef.

Hi Lazyace,
I should be the last to comment on this subject as I couldn't dive for the last few years.
If my two cents mean anything, I agree with tk.
I was taught to dive without gloves, and always keep 3 ft. away from anything. Don't touch, etc. Just touching can kill growth.
Never heard of a reef hook! Sounds damaging!
Good luck --Bob

tk and Bob,

That was my suspicion too! I talked to an instructor at Scuba.com while placing an order and he recommended it to me. I plan to leave it home and send it back later, for refund.

Thanks for your fast replies.
