Baggage Weight Limit

My wife and I are going to Moorea and Bora Bora in early October. We have been informed that our total baggage weight per person is 44lbs - this is due to space issues on the flights. However, we plan to dive on both islands and would like to bring our dive gear.
1. Is the 44 lbs per person accurate? 2. Is there an additional weight allowance specifically for dive gear?
Thanks for all your advice / help.

The 44 lbs is accurate for mostly all inter-island flights. However, on all flights operated with ATR aircraft (the vast majority of flights) , an additional free baggage allowance of 11 pounds is granted to scuba divers upon presentation of their diver’s card at the check-in counter. If you are overweight, the max charge for your itinerary would be approx $3.60 for each excess kilo (2.2 pounds). Overweight charges are also very hit or miss. You might get charged for excess baggage, you might not. It all depends on who checks you in and what their mood is that day.

Any guess as to how much snorkel, mask, fins weigh?
And how much BCD, regulator weighs?
My wife has her own reg, we both have our own BCD, but I'm wondering weather it's worth it to have my own BCD if it costs $$$ each time I fly (I'm doing PPT-Moorea-Bora Bora-Rangiroa-PPT).
Thanks!

I was informed that if you are overweight when you depart Papeete, you can pay one fee that will cover you for the rest of your stops. That takes some of the sting out of checking in at all those other places. Of course, you may add weight--like buying their wonderful Tahiti Drink, coconut liquer, shampoo, monoi oil, etc..but don't know how they would manage that!

Carol S. Your post is correct. You pay the round trip excess baggage fee your furthest destination from PPT. So if you are going PPT/MOZ/HUH/BOB/PPT, you would pay the excess fee based on a PPT/BOB/PPT itinerary. This saves you a small bit change.
But, you can only get this deal by paying this special rate at PPT. They will then stamp your tickets and you will not be charged excess baggage fees on any remaining flights.
