My husband and I own a really nice 7.2 digital camera but can't get a casing for it.

We only snorkel and don't want to spend a lot of money on a new underwater one. However I don't know if we will ever get back to Tahiti and want great shark & snorkel shots.

Has anyone ever heard of PIXTREME 3.1 digital sports underwater camera? Goes to 125' underwater. I found it on sale for only $99.99. Usual going rate is about $140.00. I checked a bunch of diver website forums and couldn't find much info on this camera other than people asking questions without any responses.

I don't understand how software can turn it into a 5.0MP??

Here's the specs on it. Please let me know what you think.

3.1 Megapixel (3.3 actual) 5.0 MP with software
Resolution 2560 x 1920-interpolated (2048 x 1536 actual)
1.5" Color LCD Screen
Auto flash
Video Record
4X digital zoom
16MB built in storage
External memory: up to 512MB SD/MMC card
Pixtreme Accessories Available

I actually bought the Pixtreme camera because I didn't want to spend a fortune on underwater casings. You are not going to get the quality that you get with the 7.2 digital camera that you have, but I think it takes decent pictures. Its better than what you would get then if you used underwater disposable camera's without having to spend a lot of money. It is really easy to use and the digital camera just pops in and out of the underwater casing.

Fluffypig: I'm interested in that camera. Can you tell me if you ordered it on-line, and if so, where? Sounds like a great price. Thanks.

I wouldn't have too many expectations for this camera for use underwater except in very shallow water on a bright, sunny day. I just came back from Bora Bora and Rangiroa. I used a dedicated underwater 35mm film camera (Minolta Dual 35). I used Fujifilm 800 film. Unless I photographed in less than 5 feet of water, there wasn't enough light to get sharp images considering both the fish and I are moving. The digitial camera will problably have an equivalent ASA of only 50-100 and the flash will be very weak. The best underwater phots are taken with powerful underwater flashes close to the subject. Look for many underwater photos I took soon on this board to see how difficlut is it to get acceptable photos. The cheap camera will be fine for use as an waterproof camera for snapshots.

I just posted my underwater photos. Only my better ones are posted. You can see that even having 800 speed film is not enough for distance shots, but good enough for closeup shots.

As I said I have this camera and the picture quality is fine for me. I am not a professional photographer so I don't expect professional quality pictures. I would tell anyone that doesn't want to spend a fortune on underwater casing's that this camera takes good pictures for the price.
