Hello

My fiance and I plan on traveling to Bora Bora next year in June. We were contemplating learning to scuba dive there. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Good idea? bad idea?

Thanks

I think it’s a great idea. My husband and I completed our certification in FP. We actually took the classroom and pool portion of the training here in Minnesota, and did the 4 open water dives to complete the certification in Moorea. We then went on to Bora Bora and did a couple dives there as well. We enjoyed diving and are glad we went ahead with it. If you are going to do it, I would suggest at least doing the pool and classroom portion before you go; otherwise, you will spend a fair amount of your vacation reading about diving and watching videos on it not to mention being in the pool instead of the ocean.

Great idea!!!! My fiance has been certified for 11 years, I got mine 4 years ago. There is nothing like scuba diving - it is entirely worth every penny. It really opens up a whole new world that most people don't get to experience, plus it adds a whole new dimension to any future trips you plan.

I think it is a better idea to learn and get certified before going on your trip. I would recommend taking the classroom/pool portion with a local dive shop. The location of the open water cert dives are entirely up to you. (I did mine at the end of October in an inland lake in Michigan. The air temp was 52 degrees and it was windy out...brrr!)

We did our certification in Southern California and our final dive was in February on Catalina Island. It was certainly beautiful, but sooooo cold! We were all glad that the dive boat had a Jacuzzi on deck! We have Never dove in cold water again...!

My wife wouldn't think of scuba diving, but I say don't hesitate and just do it if you're even thinking about it. I just got back from my first "real" dive and was blown away. Can't wait until the next scuba opportunity.

I did classroom/pool in CT and certification in PA before I went. Definitely worth doing as much as you can beforehand. I'd rather do "real" diving in FP then have do training there. But as others have indicated, certainly a personal choice.

A lot of people say do all of the training dives before you get to FP. I disagree. The training dives in FP are quite different than in most USA locations the visibility is great you are still seeing tons of sea life and the water is warm. Very low student to instructor ratio, there were only two of us. On my certification dives on Bora only 10-15 minutes out of the 40 -50 minute dives were spent doing the test parts so don't feel like you will spend all your time pulling your mask off and putting it back on. As long as you have to do all the certification tests you might as well enjoy them. Hell, the boat ride to the dive sites on Bora are worth the lesson price.

i do agree that doing classroom and pool stuff before you go is the best way to do it.
