Minou - Steel tanks? I have to admit I'm not familiar with what type tanks we always dive with in Mexico.. All I know is that with a dive skin (lycra) I have to wear 10 pounds of weight on my belt or I ain't goin' anywhere.. and my wife, all 110 pound sof her has to wear 8 pounds of weights on her best or she ain't going anywhere either..

I am going to guess that steel tanks weigh more than whatever tanks I've been diving with for 14 years.. the question is.. how much more do they weigh, or how do they affect you differently so that you don't need weights?

Wow - I feel stupid for not knowing that after diving as long as I have.. Just apparently have never dove with a shop who used steel tanks..

I used 3 kilo with a steel tank and a 1 mil. Just right!

The Blue Dolphins are great, right next to the Kia Ora. But, nothing is far from the Kia Ora, so Top Dive is also fine.

BTW: all islands we dove in Feb the operators' prices included all equipment needed (and were not less if you BYOG). AND, they all had shortys and a couple had 2 mils.

dont worry, just tell the instructor or divemaster what you used before with what type of suit and they will be able to estimate what you need if you're not sure.

I would recommend bringing your own dive equipment if you'll be happier diving with it. I always bring my own mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuits (I have a 2mm shorty and a 3/2mm full suit). Don't have the other gear and have never had a problem with any dive operators, but if you're used to using your own you'll probably be more comfortable with it. Even if you're charged for overweight baggage... in the grand scheme of things it will be a small percentage when you look at the total cost of the trip. After spending all that money, what's a few more dollars to be sure you'll be comfortable with your dives.

You can try to eliminate "real clothes" to lighten the load, as you really won't need too much. I'm a notorious overpacker, but feel if I get stuck paying for overweight baggage, it's worth the extra expense to know it's all there. I should have learned by now, as I never use half of what I pack.

During one of my trips to Rangiroa, I took a small carry-on and left my big duffle at the Papeete airport storage. I was in Moorea and had to pass through Papeete to get the Rangiroa flight. You won't have that option this trip since you're traveling to both Bora Bora and Rangiroa.

Your 3mm wetsuit should be fine. I usually bring the 2 suits. I first try my 2mm shorty 'cause I hate the restricting feeling of wearing the full suit, but if I'm cold during my first dive I have the option to switch over to the other.

I also had the pleasure of diving the Cenotes (Taj Maha and Chac Mool) and only had my shorty that trip. Luckily, I had a friend ask me which wetsuit I planned to bring for the dives. When I replied a 2mm shorty--he almost fell on the floor (what was I thinking?). He made me bring his 5mm suit which was too large for me, but I wore it over my 2mm shorty and was just fine.

In Rangiroa I used both Six Passengers and the Raie Manta Club and both were good. Last trip to Bora Bora I used Top Dive and they were a good dive operator as well. They should all have websites you can check for further info. It's been a couple of years since I've been to either island, so check the reviews on this board for more current feedback.

If you decide to go with an off-site operator, they'll usually pick you up and drop you off at your hotel.

Have a great trip!

MooreaGirl - thank you so much for all the info. I was contacted by the dive operator we will dive with in Rangiroa (Blue Dolphins) and Mickael told me wetsuits are included in the price - so i'll probably use a 2mm shorty - I don't really wanna pack my full 3mm suit as its just too bulky and I don't want full sleeves and legs - don't know why I bought that thing..

Next time in Mexico dive Dos Ojos cenote... It is friggen awesome... but friggen freezing as well! Thank you again and I'm pretty sure we're gonn atake all our equipment.. I just got a new Scubapro BC and a bunch of other stuff as payment for a dive website I did and I hate to leave it in the closet at home.. Check this out.. the guy loves the site, palys me all this equipment for it, then two months later hires a guy as a dive instructor who's just learning how to do websites and doesn't have a CLUE how to deal with Flash, which is th eprogram I used to build it.. so the owner takes down the site I built tht kicked BUTT and is allowing his dive instructor to build their site and it is a friggen JOKE.. Worst site I've EVER seen in my life.. but, I got all new equipment for it to replace my old stuff - notmy fault that the store owner is an idiot haha.. thanks again..
