Hello.....I just found this forum and thought perhaps someone could offer us some valuable advise.

We are scheduled for the Tahitian Princess 4/16/07 and are booked on diving excursions in Riatea and Bora Bora.

We recieved our OPEN Water Cert. in August 2006 and our Advanced Open Water in November 2006 and have been on two dive trips to Costa Rica.

I was wondering if anyone has had experiences good or bad regarding dive excursions from the TP. Does anyone know what dive operators TP is using right now? We would like to research these operators in advance if at all possible. Also, we are trying to decide whether we ought to bring our own wetsuits,BCs, fins, booties, etc. Any advice?

Any response either negative or positive would be helpful and appreciated.

Thank you in advance of any help...

Hello,

I was also wondering if anyone would be willing to relate their diving experiances in general concering accents and decents? While we are PADI certified we are also still new and I personally have had a scary runaway accent already.....I like line accents since I seem to get very light at the end of dives....do the operators there give the options for line accents or do the diving conditions not permit for it....

Thanks for any response...

jwhite - before you start your ascent, empty ALL the air out of your BC. Have your dive buddy pat the BC down while you hold the valve open to make sure you get it all out - then once on the surface, add a little to help keep you afloat.. I've seen other beginners rocket to the surface as well - the air in their BC's expands as they ascend to the surface, making them much more bouyant..

Emptying ALL the air from your BC before you ascend (and you may try emptying more air every ten feet or so as the expanded air will be easier to purge) should clear up your problem.. Good luck!

SST,

Thanks....I have been emtying all the air out of my BC or so I thought but had not tried having my dive buddy actually squeeze out the air. I will certainly try that.....good suggestion.

Twice in November I could not control my ascent despite being told I had too much weight. February in Costa Rica I did better (I bought my own BC and think it helped some) but it still worries me and I would be more comfortable if line ascent were available.

I will have to adjust weight again since I don't think my 3/2 wet suit will be appropriate for Tahiti...sounds like everyone uses shorties.

Any idea what operators serve the cruise ship Tahitian Princess?

Thanks again for your suggestion.

jwhite - sorry, no I don't know what dive operator services the ships.. Another trick I use to empty the air isto kind of roll over on my back (facing the surface) while holding the valve open.. I may roll over 2 or 3 times and that always will send a flurry of bubbles out of the BC.. Once I'v emptied all the air, I actually start sinking, so I have to kick to get to the surface, but that keeps me 100% in control..

In Bora, some of the dives we did had lines that they tied the boat to, but I wouldn't count on it.. No, the waters in Tahiti are pretty warm - roughly 84-85 farenheit. All we used were lycra skins for protection - you really won't need anything to keep you warm.. That in itself will probably help with the uncontrollable ascents..

Also don't forget to breathe out as much air (while maintaining an open airway) while ascending. Dive operators usually always think people are wearing too much weight, because they themselves wear so little - reason being that since they dive so often they are experts at controlling their bouyancy.. I gotta tell you, it amazes me that a guy can go diving in salt water with a wetsuit on with only 4 pounds of weight on.. I don't see how they do it - I wear 10 pounds myself..

Some people are just really positively bouyant - you might fall into that category, but I still think we can make your ascents more controlled with more experience.. Its hard to explain, but the more you dive, the better you will get at controlling your bouyancy.. Also, something to consider.. if you are extremely worried about your ascent, you will probably begin to panic and hyperventilate a little, which will DEFINITELY cause you to become more bouyant.. so do your best to remain calm and breathe normally.. Take care..

I HIGHLY recommend the new Bathy's Dive Center in the Intercontinental Resort in Moorea. I just finished my PADI there and I felt very comfortable! I started lessons in California before my trip and DID NOT like it at all. I never finished and thought that I would just snorkel when I got to Moorea. After my husband did his first dive, he talked me into taking lessons at Bathy's. My instructor, John, taught me so much and I never felt scared in the ocean. They really went out of their way to take care of me. My ocean dives were always one on one with him, while the rest of the divers shared the other two guides. The best part was that I didn't miss out on all of the beautiful things I saw in the ocean.

on our last two trips we have been diving with Moorea Fun Dive (which I HIGHLY recommend ) and the dive shop working out of the Pearl Resort (named slipped my mind) . Neither boats were crowded and both were more than willing to help anyone in need of it. I will always use Moorea Fun Dive in the future.
