film & x-ray machines

After being forced to send my 800 film through the x-ray machine in PPT, my underwater pictures have come out pretty grainy and most are blurry. Is this the result of the x-ray machine? Somebody said the machine would fog the pictures but I don't know what that would look like. I wish I spoke French so I could write to someone at the airport to complain about this unfair treatment.

How much would it cost to get the films developed in Papeete? In Moorea? Thank you

Film developing in FP is very expensive. I wouldn't consider this an option.

I dont think the x ray machine had anything to do with your underwater photos - Most underwater self contained units have slow film to compensate for the lack of good light underwater. Most of the pictures will be grainey or out of focus. Sometimes your lucky and get great shot but you usually need to be close up and steady.

I have my own underwater camera and I used 800 speed film for those pictures that came out grainy and blurry.

Blurry would have nothing to do with X-ray exposure. That indicates a slow shutter speed and a moving object (or unsteady camera). I would guess blurry is a common problem for those of us who do not routinely shoot photos under water.
If I remember my photography class correctly, grainy usually means that a film was overexposed or overdeveloped, producing a thin image on the film. When the film is printed, the natural grain of the film shows up on the print (since it was not masked by a denser image. (I hope I don't have this logic upside down)Faster films exaccerbate the problem since they are naturally grainier.
So, blurry AND grainy together suggests that a relatively slow shutter speed may have overexposed the film.
This does NOT rule out x-ray exposure, but I don't know how X-rays would affect film that has already been shot.

Me again. You didn't say what kind of camera. If it was a disposable with 800 film, it would probably be prone to an incorrect exposure underwater, since they are set with fixed apearture and fixed shutter speed.
Lastly, if the camera had a flash, or if the sun was behind you, the graininess could actually be "backscatter" - light reflected off all the micro-organisms floating in the water between you and your subject.

This is some info that I passed along on another post(same topic) in the recent past. You may want to run a search on "lead bag" for even more info.Incidently the mentioned bags are large enough to fold over and double for even greater protection.Xray damage will appear as streaks, ghosts or sun spots.
"As I mentioned in an earlier reply I use a lead bag in my carry on bag for my film, including 800 speed.I have rarely been challenged on the lead bag and when I have I've opened it for inspection AFTER ITS PASSED THRU THE XRAY MACHINE,so still no harm done. The bag is reusable many times over, will hold 60 rolls of film or at least 4 disposable underwater cameras. The bag is available at most any camera shop and is a "SIMA Jumbo FilmShield" measuring 16" x 20".The cost is $12.95 US.....well worth the peace of mind.Have a great trip !!!"

Just got back from Tahaa & Huahine. Took 2 disposable underwater cameras loaded with 800 speed film which went thru Xray machines in FP. Film was not fogged. Pics weren't the best largely due to my being too far from the subject.

Just returned from Rangi and Manihi - At Faaa Airport they put ALL your luggage throught the x-ray machines and everything in them. They are not willing to work with you. They also go through ALL your carry-ons by hand and you have no choice. But they will not take the time to look at each cannister of film so if it's ASA800...it goes through with the rest. I do have my film back yet but I will let you know if any was fried.
