How does one say "hello", "goodbye" and "thank you" in Tahitian?

Is there a decent Tahitian phrasebook or dictionary available anywhere?

You can find the ones you're looking for, and more, right here on this website...

This link should help you out more since it pronounces the words so you can hear how they should sound rather than trying to guess at how they would sound.

Iaorana, nana, and mauruuru = hello, goodbye, and thank you.

Iaorana is pronounced similar to "your honor"; nana is pronounced like "nah nah" (or that song that went "na na na na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye"!) and mauruuru is pronounced "mah roo roo." And both the above links are excellent too!

When, in a foreign country, I encounter people who don't speak English, I find that speaking it both more loudly and slowly is effective...

My experience is that you will find english speaking people at all the hotels and major shopping areas. I have never found my lack of French to be a problem.

yllams, mauruuru for the byu website!!! We learned a few more phrases this trip and by far, we got the best smiles with Aita e apea apea and the comment "oh. you speak Tahitian". Very fun and rewarding. We will practice with the phrases from the website and add more for our next visit. Thanks!!!
