Does anyone know if the grass hula skirts called "more" by the locals are available for sale anywhere? If so, how much are they (CFP) and what colours do they come in, besides the natural colour?

I've seen them at the Marche in Papeete on the lower level. I've only seen them in the natural color. I'm leaving next week, so I'll check them for price and if any other colors are available.

Thanks Kiki! I wouldn't mind knowing if the sellers take credit cards as well, and if they are adult sizes-not the ones people buy for their kids' luau parties.

Tiki, I will get as much information as I can and let you know on our return. I must know...are you also interested in a coconut bra to go with the grass skirt? They have all different sizes!!!! ;-)

Haha, I wish I could fit into those little coconut bras! No chance! I also like those long dresses they wear for aparima dance, I think they call them "Purotu". Don't know if you can buy those off the rack or need to have them made up. I might have to chase up some of the Mama's in the dance groups for 2nd hand ones!

Well, Tiki, I've seen some pretty good sized coconut bras, but they don't look all that comfortable. I'll ask around about the long dresses, too. One of my friends daughtor is a dancer and she might know where to find them. There are lots of fabric stores in Papeete, so they may have a pattern for the dresses. Will you be going soon?

Hi Kiki, we are going Nov 6-11, just a very long weekend, but I had some frequent flyer miles burning a hole in my pocket. You seem to know a lot about Tahitian dance costumes-can you do the tamure? I am a popa'a married to a Cook Islander for 4 years so I have picked up quite a bit of the dance. Cook Island dance is very similar to Tahitian.

Hi Tiki! In my younger days I could do a fairly good imitation of the tamure, however at my age aparima's are more do-able.;-) and comfortable! I got my first grass skirt when I was 15 and have been "practicing" ever since. We must talk more about the Cook Islands. My husband has been wanting to go there for several years. This trip on Tuesday was a spur of the moment trip. My husband had a mild stroke and had to take a month off work. To cheer him up, I mentioned that Air Tahiti Nui was running a special this month.I wasn't really serious, but he was on the phone in five seconds and managed to get us on a sold out flight. I guess if he has to recover it might as well be in paradise! So, we're off and I will get all the information for you.

Hey, I'm no spring chicken myself and I also prefer aparimas, but can manage a short tamure. Have fun! If you see any good dance shows can you let me know-you sound like you know enough about the dance to judge if they are good or not.

Hi - Just wore the coconut bra and found it quite comfortable to my surprise! The mamas told me it was too big...but I told them that I wanted to cover as much as possible...it was quite the hit for the Pareo contest on board the m/s Paul Gaugin! Have fun!
PS...to the topic... Saw grass skirts...but could not find the Tahitian skirt - that just surrounds the hips....I have looked everywhere....any suggestions?
