Hi Tiki! I was able to get a little information for you, though I didn't have enough time to really shop around. (NEVER enough time!) The vendor on the lower floor in the Marche had a basic adult skirt for $30.00 in the natural color only. The childrens sizes came in different colors. She had another skirt, complete with intricate weaving at the hips, mother-of-pearl and flowers for $90. She didn't speak english so we couldn't communicate very well. She doesn't take charge cards. On the sidewalk outside the Marche were many aparima gowns. The one vendor I spoke with said she takes charge cards and the average price of her dresses is around $50. There were other vendors with quite a nice selection. The exchange rate is pretty low right now, and I'm quoting in American dollars, so the exact price may not be as accurate. I didn't see any shows in Tahiti, just Moorea. The best show there was Friday night at the Sofitel. They also perform on the Windsong on Saturday night. It seems Tahiti has the best shows, but they dont have nearly as many as they used to. If you're staying in Tahiti, I remember the Beachcomber had the best shows. This was a few years ago, though. Maybe someone has seen the shows in Tahiti and can give you more of a recommendation. I might also sugest that you get one of the videos or DVD's of the Heiva. The costumes and dancing are wonderful and you'll be able to get more ideas from them. ATN had pictures of this years Heiva in their flight magazine. Incredable!!! Hope this was of some help! Wish I could go with you in Nov.

Thanks, Kiki! That info is a great help because I have to work out how much cash to bring since I don't trust the ATM's to work with Aussie cards. The natural colour hula skirts can be dyed if they are the real thing (hibiscus bark) and not those plastic ones you see in party supply stores. We will be in Tahiti on a Friday night (Sofitel) and Moorea for a Saturday and Sunday so we will miss those shows you saw but will hopefully see othe good ones. We are also looking forward to clubbing on Friday night with Tahitians, I guess we will just follow our ears to find good Island (not disco or western club music). I do have many videos and DVD's but have not found Heiva 2002 for sale yet, hopefully 2003 will be out by the tme we get there. Of course we will film any hotel show we see. I would love to do swaps with anyone else who films ENTIRE hotel shows (not just clips like most tourists do). Only problem is we in Australia use PAL system and AMericans use NTSC so they don't work unless you have a multisystem VCR. There are also issues with zones in DVD's. Not sure what this entails as I have only recently bought a DVD player and sucessfully played 2 Tahitian DVD's.

Glad I could help. I'm sure one of the major hotels on Tahiti will have a show on Friday night. They end early, so there's still time to party afterward. Tahiti-boutique.com has a nice selection of videos and you can e-mail questions about whether or not the videos will work for you. They're very pleasant to deal with. Shipping may be a little pricey, though.

For anyone else who wants to know: natural colour hula skirts cost 2500 CFP, they are sometimes available dyed for 3000 CFP. When we were there, colours available were yellow, orange, red and cherry. I bought cherry and a few naturals to take home and dye myself. There are more elaborate ones with shell decorations for 4500 CFP. Coconut bras were about 1500 CFP but maximium size up to about a C cup only.
