We just got news that our original flight out of L.A. to Toronto got cancelled. We fly in (on the way home) from Papeete at 1310 (1:10 pm) on Air New Zealand. We don't fly out of L.A. until 10:30 pm-ish, so we have over 9 hours sitting in LAX. Any ideas? I think we'd like to stow our luggage there & go see something scenic (we aren't shoppers). We'd likely also want to get an early dinner & be back at LAX by 7:30 pm. So we have 5-6 hours to kill. Anyone from L.A. know what we could do or see? What a long trip home we'll have (we leave Bora Bora Friday afternoon & get home Sunday morning after 6 am....well, not home exactly, just to Toronto). :-(

Not sure when you're flying or how. Was this a chartered trip? What airline? They should be able to put you on an earlier flight or at least let you stand by for an earlier flight. If I were you, instead of resigning yourself to such a long layover I would get on the phone and tell them you need to be on an earlier flight.

Hi,
LAX is a couple miles north from Manhattan Beach. If you go to the downtown area near the pier there are shops, restaurants etc. Highly recommend Michi's for dinner. Cafe Pierre's is also quite good. The beach & pier are nice but may be a letdown after French Polynesia!

I work in downtown LA. If you are adventerous, you might catch the free "G" bus shuttle to the Green Line Station and take the light rail to the Blue Line transfer station (about 15 minutes), and take the Blue Line into the financial district of LA. On the train, you will get a good glimpse of LA without having to drive, albeit just not the glamorous westside of LA. The train is very clean and $1.35, and transfers to the blue line might be free or .25. It has been a few years since I've ridden the thing. You buy the tickets from a vending machine so bring some bills and change with you. It is safe, but just don't wear all your black pearls on board. From LAX to downtown will take an hour at most.
Downtown LA financial district can be explored by foot: the LA Public Library (good food at the outdoor cafe)- inside of the library is worthy of a peek inside, the new Disney Concert Hall designed by Gehry, the new and very large Cathedral of our Lady of the Angeles, Pershing Square, Biltmore Hotel, futuristic Bonaventure Hotel. That would take about 2 hours to 2.5 hours of time to walk around and a quick bite to eat. You would board the Blue Line again around rush hour (6 pm) and get back to LAX around 7 pm.
Reach me at rodjune@yahoo.com if you have furthre questions.

I'd secomd the walking tour of downtown LA. We did a similar trip only from Long beach on the light rail. In addition to the above the Museum of Contemporary art which is very nice and also the Central Market has great food. I am not from LA, in fact not from the US at all and we managed in LA on public transport with a small guide book with a map and it was fine. An alternative would be to organise a guided tour. We did a whistle stop bus tour last time we had a layover in LA and it was great. Very different form doing it yourselves and hand on heart I would rather do the first option, but its a good idea if you are short on time and you are tired after an overnight flight.

Wow! Thanks so much for all of the suggestions! I'm going to print them out & take them with me.
As for getting an earlier flight, there just isn't one with the airline we're flying (and we're accumulating frequent flyer miles with them, so I'd like to stick with them--not to mention that we got a great price booking 6 months ago...if we take the cash, we'll pay much more for a different flight). There's a flight that leaves just before we arrive & then the one 9 1/2 hours later! The airline has cancelled a lot of flights lately (financial problems) so we weren't surprised, just surprised how long we do have to wait.
But with all the above suggestions, this looks like we could have fun! Thanks so much!

How about a little sunshine on the beach? What we once did: hopped on a cab, got for about $20 bucks to Marina del Rey and walked the beach to Venice (muscle) Beach. On the way back we had dinner outdoors at The Cheesecake Factory at the marina and 15 minutes later we were back at LAX. Easy!

Cork, that's a great suggestion. I guess because I work in LA, and live in Seal Beach California, I don't go to the beaches here because of the cold-water and they are relatively dirty, and nothing like the beaches in warmer, tropical climate beaches like the Caribbean or Hawaii (or FP!). To each his own. I do take the LA area beaches for granted. For those who don't live near beaches, I suppose an LA beach is better than nothing.

Not exactly my cup of tea, but renting a car and taking a tour of the homes in Beverly Hills and window-shopping on Rodeo Drive and vicinity would be interesting if you have not been to LA. Beverly Hills is much close to LAX than downtown LA. Santa Monica and Venice (Venice for pure curiousity and people-watching) would be an option as well

Whatever you do, wherever you go, make sure you give yourself ample time to return to LAX - rush hour in L.A. is not fun at all!
