Old Wife,
I have a question... If you do not get a hotel room and do not rent a car, where are you going to stow your luggage? There is no longer any storage available at LAX...

Wow, thanks for letting me know that! It didn't even occur to me that we couldn't store our stuff....hmm, now I'm thinking I really should try to pack light (in 2 backpacks), but I don't think that's really practical or possible for us. Shoot. More & more things to think about (now I'm picturing Old Husband & me trying to drag our luggage down the beach as we go for a walk, LOL!). Is there anywhere nearby that we could store our luggage?

Old Wife,
Maybe one of the big hotels near the airport (one with a free shuttle back and forth) would allow you to store luggage there for a small fee? You might want to give them a call on their 800 numbers and make arrangements beforehand: with 1/2 mile of LAX are a Marriott, an Embassy Suites, a Westin, a Radisson, and a bunch of big-name others. Some have "park n rides" on their property, allowing travelers to leave their cars there while in transit, so maybe they'd also consider allowing luggage storage? (If you find one, please post the details for us so other know about this option...)
Your other option is to rent a car to get around. If you do, get one big enough to hold your luggage, but be careful where you park it if the luggage is visible. Good luck!

The air quality in LA will be just fine ithin a few days of the fires ending. I live in Santa Clarita and the smoke is pretty bad right now. You can also count on the air being fine with any rain in the LA basin. The rain clears out the air particulates. Further, the air quaility in LA is much better than it was in the 70's, except for these fire days.

Thanks for the offer, Steph. That's sweet of you. Does anyone know if we can check our luggage in for the next flight ahead of time? In other words, check the luggage but leave to sight-see and come back later to check ourselves in?
I like the car-rental idea. That would be a good possibility for us. Do I have to reserve ahead or will I just be able to get "something" at the airport on a Saturday afternoon? I'm hesitant to book anything because we might be so exhausted (if we don't sleep well on the flight) and want to change our plans to a hotel room at the time.

Old Wife,
Call Air New Zealand and ask -- last time I flew ANZ (before 9/11), they said earliest check-in of luggage was 6 hours before any international flight, but sometimes they do not have the check=in counter OPEN that early. I know with Air Tahiti Nui, it is NOT possible to check-in your luggage until 3 hours prior, and they do not have the counter open until then, at least for the 1 p.m. flight.

Old Wife,
Sorry, I just realized that your question about early check-in of your luggage was not regarding ANZ, but was about your domestic flight home after arriving in LAX on ANZ? Anyway, call your airline and ask, but I'm pretty sure the new security restrictions prohibit them from taking in luggage until 3 or 4 hours prior to the flight time.

Renting a car in LA will need reservations at the big ones such as Avis and Hertz. Dollar has walk up car usually. Just remember that all the car rental place are not in the airport. You will need to take a shuttle and then check in and the same on the reverse. Its about an 45 minutes to and hour on both sides.

Thanks, everyone. I'll check with Air Canada (our flight back to Toronto) about checking in luggage early. What a hassle to go through after 2 weeks in paradise, eh? Oh, well, maybe we can just sit at the airport & do some 'remembering'!
