If you want excellent food and don't mind spending a few bucks try Coco's in Punaauia just outside of Papeete. It's worth the price.

I second Coco's. Very good food and nice ambience. It's located on the bay and at night you can't see much, but I'm sure the view at lunch would be great. Also like le Retro & Les Trois Brasseurs for reasonably priced meals. Les Trois Brasseurs also has it's own brewery.

Hey I'll try Coco's when I return in March. Don't want to go to Le Retro again though as they are trying to buck the no-tipping custom.

In Tahiti, I love Snack Jimmy on Rue Colette. It is reasonably priced and serves Thai, Chinoise and Vietnamese food. Nice tablecloths, nice ambiance. This is where "they" chose to have Chirac eat when in Tahiti in July. I was surprised at the choice--but all the gov't folks eat there. I have never been disappointed.
I do agree that the roulottes are a wonderful choice.

we just returned from a week in moorea, week in bora bora and 5 days in tahiti...the resteraunts in moorea were wonderful, some of the same ones we went to 10 years ago, our favorite is le pechuer in maharepa, also la cocotier...excellent, as was le sud and the la patisierre for a wonderful simple breakfast of crepes, or even to stop in for a little sweet....alfredos was fun and excellent had a lunch and dinner there, and others we just didn't have time to hit....on bora bora, bens place for lunch, also hit bloody marys....being on the motu, ate mostly hotel food there.....and in tahiti....we liked el retro at there 10 years ago as well, and if want a bit nicer morridons cafe was excellent too, as was casablanca on the harbor....so many choices...the food is great over there, but moorea was our favorite for getting around to all of them...

I agree. Le Pecheur was very good when we were there in 1999. Glad to hear it's still in business. We met a local family there while having our meal. The husband wanted to practice his English. Was fun to interact with some locals. He invited us to his son's birthday party the next day at their home. Also, the snack place in the little shopping mall in that same area of Maharepa had very good hamburgers. We sat on their patio and had lunch while a storm passed over and it poured.
