NYCchic -
We used two cameras. The "land" pictures were taken with a Pentax K100D digital SLR (the trip was really just an excuse for me to buy this). The "underwater" pictures were taken with an Olympus D565 digital point and shoot camera with underwater case that I purchased for about $100 on ebay before the trip. I think the Olympus is about 3 years old.
Vaitape -
My impressions of the island are that it is a must see if your intersted in archeology or history or stuff like this. I had previously been to Stonehenge and was a little disappointed (although still amazed) that it was not as large as I had imagined, but Easter Island was everything I'd imagined and more. It also gave us even more of a tie in to a "Polynesian Vacation" than just going to FP. Lots of similarities in origins, language and such to other polynesians. The big difference is that this is definitely not a tropical island. It reminded me somewhat of California's Central Coast including the wishy washy unpredictable weather.
Also since we do like some advenutre on a vacation, this was a also a good compliment to the luxury side of the trip we had in FP. This is definitely not a destination for a "resort" vacation. There are no resorts on the island. The hotels are all about the same - small but clean, usually privide a very modest continental breakfast. The one we stayed at had an unheated swimming pool (no jacuzzi). I'd estimate they are about a 2 star if comparing to something in the US - kinda like a Motel 6 but on a smaller scale.
This part of our trip came with prescheduled tours (a good idea here). Over 3 days we did 2 1/2 day tours and one full day tour that included lunch. Starting with these tours and spending our final day exploring is a good way to see the island. The tours ensure you see the "best of" the sites, provide lots of historical information about these sites and EI in general, and provide alot of information regarding "do's and don'ts" when visiting the archeological sites. Visit the museum if it is not included in the tours.
The language primarily spoken is Spanish. Although the rapanui language is spoken still, it is very seldom heard, unlike in FP where you still hear and see written alot of the Tahitian languages. Overall it has a South American influence to it, rather than French or what one would expect to find in the South Pacific.
