Moorea Beachcomber and Nonsmoking room

We are arriving at the Moorea Beachcomber on March 8th. I emailed them to ask if we could have a fully overwater bungalow (which I learned on this site!! Thank you!!). They told me that those huts are not non smoking, but that they would try to air it out before our arrival. I am allergic to smoke...and am not sure if I should take the risk, or forego the deep water for the non smoking room. What are other people's experiences? Thank you!!

Given the open windows and air flow in OWB's generally (but have not stayed ta the Beachcomber), I don't think it would be a problem even if you got a smoking room.

We stayed in an OWB at the Moorea Beachcomber (a fully over the water one)and I don't believe there was any odor at all! Between the lagoon (salt water) and fresh island breezes, I don't forsee a problem. ENJOY!

Peggy,
I have stayed in Beachcomber overwaters several times and have NEVER smelled stale smoke in the rooms, although they are all "smoking" rooms. Cigarettes are a fact of life in French Polynesia -- many Europeans and Tahitians smoke, there are very few or no restrictions on smoking, and you will need to get accustomed to that. Plan on eating at outdoor restaurants, or, if indoors, ask to be seated near the open windows. If someone is smoking near you, be polite enough NOT to ask them to stop -- a sign of an ugly American -- but try to remove yourself from the smoke flow. With the constant gentle breezes, and the open air atmosphere almost everywhere you go, it really shouldn't be a problem, even with allergies.

Barbi, very very good advice on advising them to be POLITE and NOT ask them to stop smoking in restaurants etc. Also don't glare or give rude smirks or comments, some people in other countries like to point out the fact that 'you are no longer in America' and will meet those requests with the opposite effect.

Thank you so much for all of your replies! Although I hate the smoke, I would never dare ask anyone to stop unless they asked me if it bothered me and I wanted them to stop...and I definitely would not do anything like that in another country, it just seems too rude! It will be a big adjustment for me...I live in Vermont, and, basically, smoking isn't allowed in any public places (except for bars). I also emailed the Tahiti Beachcomber because we will be there for part of the time, and they said that none of their OWB are nonsmoking...but that they have a special "product" they use to help air it out. Thanks again for your replies!! Peggy

Be polite enough to NOT ask them to stop smoking...are you serious??? I have no problem with the fact that some people may want to kill themselves slowly by inhaling whatever toxin or cancer-causing substance that they want, but are you forgetting that second hand smoke is a proven killer to innocent 3rd parties? OK, maybe simply sitting next to someone who is smoking while on vacation is not particularly hazardous, however, if one took that approach throughout life, they would be putting themselves at risk. If ensuring that someone else's dangerous habit does not adversely affect me makes me an "ugly American", then bring on that label. Many states within the US have passed laws prohibiting smoking in public places to protect innocent people like the bar tenders and wait-staff who have to put up with the smoke on more than an occasional basis. Maybe it's about time everyone else caught up...

the point was that you are no longer in the US. You're in their Territory, so the point was to leave your political correctedness back in the States. If it bothers you, MOVE.

The point is that your rights to do whatever you want to with yourself and your life ends as soon as it adversely impacts upon someone else's life. Political correctness has absolutely nothing to do with it. How about common human decency. If it bothers me AND threatens MY health... YOU move.

sdnative, you definitely don't belong anywhere outside the US.
Ever heard the saying "when in Rome..."??
We can legislate ourselves to death here in the US and chip away at all of our rights and freedoms we enjoy here. When you are in another country, you don't enjoy any of those rights or freedoms. You enjoy whatever that sovereign nation allows for. Just try flaunting some law they have, like letting your wife drive in Saudi Arabia for example, and see how far "but I'm an American!" gets you. It's their backyard, not yours. It's attitudes like yours that give American tourists a bad name. I would suggest visiting California, it sounds much more like your style of vacation.
