We also used Priceline for our upcoming trip at the end of August and I thought we got a good deal. Can't remember the name of the hotel right now (I'm at work) but it's a 4 star rated hotel and the rooms start at $150 per night with a AAA discount and we got the room for $75. It's a great system for something like hotels but I doubt I'd ever use it for airfare.

I see major differences between the first poster (who only was leaving 1:45 minutes between his flights) and me (who is leaving 10 minutes less than the recommended time for layover between my flight.) I was asking for help, not to be grouped together with the first poster. Basic issue is: ATN changed their flight to leave at 1 pm on Sunday. East Coasters can't get there with enough layover time on Sunday, and leaving the day before will obviously cut into weddings. Leaving on Monday is way more expensive (I know, we tried).

A few questions:

1. Checkin for ATN closes an hour before the flight, I've heard about long lines to check in. They wouldn't stop an hour before with people in line and say "oops, sorry", would they? I'm pretty sure we'll be in line within 1 hour and 50 minutes of our scheduled arrival.

2. wouldn't they then know you have to get through security and get to the gate in time?

HI...I WORK FOR AN AIRLINE AT LAX. THE TERMINAL YOU'LL BE LEAVING OUT OF WILL BE TERMINAL NUMBER 2. YOU DIDN'T MENTION WHICH AIRLINE YOU'LL BE ARRIVING ON SO I CAN'T DIRECT YOU ON THAT. ONE THING YOU CAN DO IS CHECK IN YOUR BAGS ALL THE WAY THRU TO YOUR FINAL DESTINATION. HOPEFULLY, YOUR RESERVATION WAS MADE SO IT LINKED YOUR CHICAGO TO LAX THEN LAX TO PPT. THIS WILL BE CONVIENENT SO YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR BAGS UNTIL YOU ARRIVE.

LAX IS A CRAZY AIRPORT. YOU WILL HAVE TO GO THRU SECURITY AT EACH TERMINAL. DEPENDING ON WHICH AIRLINE YOU FIRST CHECK INTO... AMERICAN AIRLINES HAS A SHUTTLE BUS THAT CONNECTS ITS PAX SO THEY DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO TRAVEL FROM ONE TERMINAL TO ANOTHER.

WELL, GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRIP!

What happens at LAX is 1) You get in the ATN check-in line to get your boarding pass and have your luggage checked in. 2) Then you have to get in the line to go thru x-ray screening. Unfortunately, this line includes everyone who is leaving on all international flights. It could be a long line. 3) After screening, you go to the ATN departure gate where they load you on a busses, more than one, and in the order of your airplane seat just like they do at any gate, to go about a mile to the airplane. They start this approx. 1 hour before take-off. If you miss the last bus, you are probably out of luck.

So, you might get your boarding pass and check your luggage, but then because of a potentially long line at screening, your luggage would make it to Tahiti, but not you.

FYI We got on the bus and arrived at the plane around 12:30.

I flew ATN on the 23rd March, we did not have to get a bus the plane was right outside the gate. So you might not always have to get the bus, perhap it depends on where LAX tells the incoming flight to dissembark.

I agree with ld above. We flew to Papeete on Sunday March 30th. Because of all the stuff I read in this board, we got there super early and had no difficulty. In addition, there were no lines in getting through security. Maybe this was a slow day?? There was no bus to the flight...it was at the terminal gate in the Bradley International Terminal. We flew from the east coast the night before and stayed in a cheap LAx hotel. BUt isnt their a 6:30 pm flight out of LA that gets into papeete at 10pm?? I could be wrong about this, but I would check...

FINALLY, I can answer this post with my own personal experience!!!

On Sunday, April 28, we left Denver on the 5:35pm flight to LAX. (We didn't check luggage, but could have, and could have checked it all the way through to PPT from DEN - it was offered to us.) We arrived in LA around 7:00pm into Terminal 7. We walked outside and caught the shuttle bus to Terminal 2 where our Air New Zealand flight was leaving from. (Shuttle bus - very easy.) We went through security and got to the gate no later than 7:30. The Air New Zealand flight left at 8:45pm.

So... to all of those people who said that you need at least 3 hours... THAT IS ABSURD. Perhaps on another airline that flies out of the Bradley Terminal (i.e., Air Tahiti Nui) you need more time because the lines at security are longer, but on Air New Zealand, 3 hours is just not necessary.

On the way back, where we did leave 3 hours for the connection because we knew we'd have to clear immigration and customs, it went so smoothly and we got through everything with such ease and speed that we actually caught an earlier connecting flight than the one we were scheduled to be on.

Maybe we just got lucky?!?!

In a perfect world, you don't need 3 hours. But Murphy's law is always a possibility. It's more "fun" to travel when you are not rushed, or worying about making connections.

Is there anybody out there reading this forum that can give a personal account of missing their flight TO Tahiti? I've read a few accounts of people missing connections coming home, which is less traumatic.
