easy to pack snacks, a couple of bottles of water for before and after th flight over (while you are waiting for your flight and once you land you might get thirsty and a bottle of water comes in handy when standing in line at customs), mini cd player with headphones for when you are laying out, and alcohol.

A CAMERA, with lots of film (packed in carry-on so it doesn't get Xrayed in checked-in luggage), and one of those waterproof, disposable underwater cameras. (Film is expensive in French Polynesia.)

A small first-aid kit for things like coral scrapes (neosporin), itchy bug bites, or sunburn (aloe vera works well). Also be sure to bring a flashlight with new batteries--there aren't any streetlights in most of the islands.

Bring a backpack for carrying stuff around with you, like a towel (learned that from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) And I would suggest a collapsible cooler for your room and beach/poolside. Always have a Hinano handy.
Binoculars. Power converter and plugs. Plenty to read.

One thing I ALWAYS take is some Tylenol PM.....if you think you might have problems sleeping in strange beds in very different surroundings than you are used to, the Tylenol PM (or generic equivalent) always helps me sleep thru the night and not be groggy in the morning. If you are drinking a fair amount of alcohol, you may want to limit the Tylenol you use as is suggested on the Tylenol bottle.
Also, did anyone mention taking your own mask and snorkel (even fins) if you plan to do serious lagoon exploration? A mask that fits your face well is all important. I have had really bad luck using hotel loaned equipment. Most importantly, the one thing you should always take with you is the ability to be flexible and just relax. Trying to or insisting on sticking to a strict schedule, as we so often do in the US, just isn't the right attiude for FP. Relax, smile, laugh with the locals and take things as they come....that's what these islands are all about. In general, pack light...you never seem to use half of what you pack anyway. Have a great adventure! Bon voyage!

In the first aid dept., take along some Dramamine. I'm not really inclined to motion or seasickness, but after a bumpy interisland flight and a boat ride over choppy water to a resort, I felt very queasy. Took Dramamine before getting on the plane on all the rest of the flights and had no further problems.

Read where someone took an underwater light for night swims. Sounded neat!

Definently your own snorkel gear! That was the best advice we got off this site before we went! We spent the majority of our time snorkling and we were so glad we had our own! We met a guy there that borrowed the hotels stuff and he had a hard time and was always stopping to clear his mask! Another great tip we got was to bring reef shoes, or water socks. Got ours at Target for $5.00! Wore them all the time! As far as the snorkle gear goes, we went to a dive shop and they helped us find what was appropriate and fit right! We spent more on our equipment, but it made our trip! Have fun!
