Planning a trip to Club Med on BB in August. Seeing a lot of travel being curtailed due to SARS and mentioned to my husband that perhaps we should purchase trip insurance. It's not cheap! But this SARS thing looks like it could be nasty. Anyone know more about it?

I didn't know you could buy insurance against a virus! Bet it's really expensive.

There is no SARS anywhere in the Sth. Pacific, and this is a non issue.
In any case regualr travel insurance provides coverage for illnesses and that would include SARS.

I don't think normal travel insurance will cover a situation where you decide not to go because you are AFRAID of getting an illness (as compared to actually having one), unless (1) they close the airport and cancel flights due to a SARS outbreak, or (2) you have the (rare) kind of travel insurance that allows you to cancel for any reason... As BB Bob pointed out, there is currently no SARS reported in FP, and you should not worry. You are more likely to get it here in the States than there! Go in August and ENJOY your vacation in paradise!

The trip insurance is a good thing generally speaking, but I wouldn't worry about the SARS issue. Sometimes you just have to step out in faith about life in general, otherwise you would never leave your house -- and a trip to Tahiti will definitely be worth it!

Hi! I live in Toronto and am getting married in less than 3 weeks. We had guests coming from England that cancelled their plans because their insurance company told them they would not be covered should they contract SARS here. I know this isn't the place to vent about that, but I can't tell you how blown out of proportion this has become. I can't remember the exact statistics, but they are almost as likely to die in a plane crash on their way here than catch and die of SARS.
Go out and enjoy your life!

Hi! I live in Toronto and am getting married in a couple of weeks. We have just had our guests from England cancel their plans to come here for our wedding becaue their insurance company told them they would not be covered should they contract SARS here. I can't begin to tell you how blown out of proportion this has become. I know this isn't the place to vent about this, but it is just so irrational. According to the stats, our guests were more likely to die in a plane crash on the way here than contract SARS.
Please go out and enjoy your life!

Hi little lamb,

We too are from Toronto area. Here's a good statistic for you. Just to show everyone how blown out all of this is.

There has not been a "new" case of SARS in Toronto since April 9th. Yes a couple of people have died. But NO NEW CASES. I'd say that is a good sign that things are under control.

Also I just got back from the Airport and there are signs posted, but there are NO additional measures being taken there.

The only time I heard about SARS was when you get off the plane in Tahiti and fill out a form that asks you where you have been during the last 15 days. They ask you to contact the airlines if you get sick with the SARS symptoms and that's it. Coming back to LA they made an announcement of the same information.
