Who know's the weight limit on Air Tahiti interisland flights, how strict they are in enforcing the weight limit and if we exceed that weight limit, how much will the excess cost?? I'm notorious for overpacking!! Please advise!!

Per this site:

The baggage weight limit on inter-island flights is 20Kg or 42 lb per person (not including hand luggage). But this is not always strictly enforced.

Do yourself a big favor and do not overpack for FP. Less is more with this destination. Depending on when you travel, they may charge you if your luggage is overweight. Excess will cost you per kg. Check Air Tahiti's website for more details.

Thanks SusanS! I read AT's website and it was a little confusing (for me). I know you are right though about the light packing. My problem, I think, is my luggage without articles is too heavy!! I'm going to try to find lighter weight luggage.

One week to go!!!! Yea!!!

I swear this works: pack your bags, then take out half the stuff you were planning to take, with the exception of bathing suits and anything related to snorkeling or sunning. Repack the half of the stuff that's left. Voila, you are ready to leave.

SusanS is right...if you are taking more than the limit, you are taking too much. We were under the limit and still had items we didn't use...we could have also done without some of the items we did use. Take as little as possible and enjoy!

I just got back from Tahiti...

If Air Tahiti weighed our luggage on the inter-island transfers, I never saw them do it. However we packed fairly light... to the tune of not checking luggage on the international flights - carry on only! And we were just fine. Like everyone else is saying, you don't need that much stuff. If you've got a swimming suit, shorts and a t-shirt, you're good!

We got weighed several times on the inter-island flights. They will make you pay ( a couple we were traveling with had to pay for overweight bags from tikehau to tahiti). One of our bags was overweight and they made us take out stuff from one bag and transfer it to another bag. Why?? because the luggage handlers wont handle bags over 35 pounds (thats what we were told!!). Of course, they didnt weigh a lot of other people's luggage - so maybe we just had bad luck. I agree with the posts above - we didnt use half the stuff we took!! Have fun

Sort of hit or miss with the weighing, but they are becoming more consistant in doing so. I've been charged a few times for overweight bags. BTW - It's not true that they don't take bags over 35lbs. You will also need to watch the carry on. Depending on the agent or number of passengers in line, often they'll ask for you to check in what you would usually carry on. Hit or miss on that one, too.
