We just got back from 7 days in Tahiti. Stayed first night at Sofitel Maeva beach in Papeete, then took the early morning ferry over to Moorea. Actually, all the ferries carry cars as well as pedestrians, but there is a "fast ferry" and a "slow ferry" (which carries larger commercial trucks and cargo.) The fast ferry only takes about 30 mins, and is a beautiful ride!

Do you remember the cost? Do you know at what time the last ferry leaves Moorea for Papeete? Thanks.

I was told there were no car ferries from Papeete to Moorea. We will be in Papeete for 3 days prior to our cruise and would like to do a day in Moorea (and do the Dolphin Quest). Can we in fact rent a car or scooter in Papeete and take it to Moorea via ferry?

You cannot take a scooter or car from Papeete to Moorea (rental co.'s do not allow it) but you can take the ferry to Moorea and rent a car at the dock. I wouldn't recommend scooters because the traffic in Moorea and esp. in Papeete is pretty hair-raising. You'll see what I mean. Rent a car, it's safer and easier.
