Hi Dawn, There are a number of good restaurants outside of the resorts. My favorite was the Te Hono Iti. Good food, nice atmosphere. The restaurant will pay for one way transportation from the resort and you pay the other. You can get the hotel to arrange this for you. There is a little village area just down the road from the PB. You will be able to do any grocery shopping there as well as having other shops, etc. to look at. It's a short walk. If you want to rent a car there was also a small rental place just along that walk to the shopping area, or if you decide to use a more known outfit (as we did) the hotel can arrange for the rental place to pick you up and take you to get your vehicle. We rented a car for 8 hrs. to drive around the island and stop at various spots, however we did all this and stopped for lunch within 4 hrs., so depending on what you want to do you can rent one for 4 hrs. only. Do have a great trip and enjoy your cruise as well. That's a lovely way to get a good look at a number of islands. We did that on our first visit, but on our last trip we opted to stay on land instead. Both trips were great.

DJ,
This will be my second time to FP and my husband's first. It's been way too long since I've been. 1975. Yikes. In any event, were than any places in particular that you would recommend to eat besides Te Hono Iti? What type of food do they serve? Looking for romance and good food in all the right places Thanks!

Hi again Dawn,
The food at Te Hono Iti is continental french cuisine, seafood, lamb, chicken, etc. We ate there a number of times because we found it better than what we had for dinners at the resorts and similar cost. Other restaurants that were recommended to us were Le Mahogany, Alfredo's and Le Bateau ( a floating restaurant ). I believe all serve similar type cuisine however we did not try these places but heard lots of good comments from other guests and locals. Also a pizza place called Danielle's. Also heard about another pizza joint called Allo's which would deliver to your hotel room. Hope this will be helpful. Which cruise ship are you going on?

In a way Dawn, I envy and yet feel a bit sorry for you. Please don't take it wrong, but those who went in the 70's really went in the Golden age of French Polynesia, the islands were much much different then, tourists were in the low numbers, you could go miles without seeing another hotel. I remember my first trip 22 years ago.
But then again, I still go as often as I can. The islands just seem to have that pull and lure that keep me going no matter how much they change. Have a great trip! I hope this trip to French Polynesia will still enchant you in the same way it may have back in 1975!

DJ: Thanks for all the tips on restaurants. We are taking the Haumana cruise. It's a 110 foot catamaran with a max of 40 passengers and crew. All food and activities are included. The itinerary includes all the smaller islands. We figured we'd get more bang for our buck without having to fly and change hotels all the time.
Any suggestions for the best tours to take on Moorea? We are fairly active & looking to do something every other day & relax on the off days.
Bix: Thanks for the warning. I've had several people tell me the same thing. I hope I don't dissapoint my husband. I've been trying to get him to go for years. I have such fond memories of FP and somehow we always wind up at some other exotic location.

WE loved Alfredo's, great food, awesome creme brulee!!! Yum! I would rent a car and check out the island at your own pace, the juice factory is cool, you will have a buzz if you do all the tastings they offer you. Some of it's really good! The shark/ray feeding and motu picnic with Maco was awesome! I'd definently reccomend that tour! Maco is very entertaining, and the sharks and rays are amazing! As far as disappointing your hubby, I don't think that's possible! I had'nt been to Tahiti until 10 mths ago, but, even with the changes, it's still unbelievable, as you have read on this site, people keep returning! Relax and enjoy!

We just returned from FP Monday. Four nights each on Bora Bora and Moorea one on Tahiti. Great trip and excellent weather. We had cruised FP twice in the past but tis was our first trip staying on the islands. Alfredos is a fantastic place but be sure and use mosquito repellent. We dined there twice and the mosquitos ate more than I did the first time.

Te Honu Iti hands down is the best restaurant in Moorea, expensive but good. Alfredo's is good and has a more party atmosphere. Christian does a great job entertaining everyone. Le Mahogany is very good as well and I have heard the new Le Pecheur is good but have not been to the new one yet. Good burgers at Bali Hai in the back the old BLue Pineapple if you want some down home type food. Rent a car for a day and explore its worth it and you can come and go the the restaurants when you want.
