Mopeds - Scooters on Moorea are DANGEROUS!

We just got the sad news that a local Tahitian friend on Moorea died after a moped/scooter accident last weekend, early Sunday morning. If you are thinking of renting a scooter or moped to tour the island, PLEASE reconsider! The road around Moorea is narrow (one lane each way) and curving, and people passing won't always see you coming. A tourist unfamiliar with the roads and trying to sightsee while driving is even MORE at risk! And NEVER drive a moped/scooter after dark! It's much safer to pay a little more and rent a car, or schedule a tour guide to show you around.

Thanks for the warning, but I gotta say I don't feel any safer in those tin can cheapo french cars than I would on a moped. Maybe the difference between a quick death and an overnight death. I upped my life insurance this year anyways. I'm worth more dead than alive!

Sub,
This was not a quick death. He was hit early Sunday morning and died Wednesday night -- a lot of suffering in between for both him and his family. This was apparently a hit and run. I agree that those little French cars are not much better protection, but if no tourists drive the roads at night, everyone would be a lot safer! Be safe, everyone!

My comment was not meant to trivialize your friends death in any way.
For myself, I don't feel it's any riskier than walking. But others may be wise to heed your advice.

I have to agree that renting scooters in Moorea is a bad idea. I personally have witnessed two separate accidents between tourists on scooters and locals. I don't think I could be talked into riding a scooter in Moorea for any reason, other than for a quick trip to the Magazin for water or Hinano. But to drive around the island--no way! Barbi, so sorry to hear of your friend.

Susan, Thanks for your thoughts. I really appreciate it!
Sub, I somehow get the idea you are not the first-time tourist trekking around on a skooter, unfamiliar with the roads... My message is more for those on Moorea the first time; just trying to keep people SAFE! Tahitian kisses to all...

I still do not know where they are all going in such a hurry. They all end up at the same place. Its one road around the island. Its not like LA where you have hours of delay because of traffic. The time to get from A to B on Moorea is almost always the same.

Does Moorea have particularly more moped/scooter accidents than other islands?

Several years ago a good friend in Moorea lost his son in a motor scooter accident..driving at night. Often they don't have lights on their scooters, or they are so dim you couldn't see them, and there is frequently a bit too much Hinano taken in before they hit the road.
On the other hand, my husband and I rent a scooter for a day or two and only drive it during the day. While we were in graduate school-albeit many years ago, a big motor scooter was our only means of transportation and we are both familiar with driving and safety issues. We have never had a problem when we have rented on many islands, but would never drive at night..as said previously, even walking at night can be a hazard! I have a flashlight with a bright LED light and I feel much safer with that than my little mag light!

Just got back from Moorea:
Rented a scooter for a full day ($50) with my wife. We tried to get a car, but they were all stick shift...
Had a wonderful time, exploring the island. The roads were mostly empty and we were very careful. Most times it felt like we were the only ones on the road.
The biggest issue for us driving at night was the bugs hitting us in the face...
