See how some folks are? They just don't want to listen to good advice.
So, short of getting killed, here's a few other things I've seen happen regularly to tourists and their scooters on Moorea:
Road rash: yes, you are alive, with no broken bones, but salt water and sand just don't have much appeal to you for the rest of your trip.
Exhaust pipe burn: same effect
Blasted toes: comes from hitting a bit of gravel on the road while touring about in your sandals . . . or from stubbing a toe on the pavement while making a turn
Pleeeeeeze, take the advice, and rent the car instead. If not for safety, just think how much more stuff you can buy along the way!

I can tell you how to take the restictor out of the moped so it's faster!
well, probably not what you wanted to hear......
