My husband and I always bring home little gifts for our family and friends during our travels and we are planning to do so while in Moorea and Bora Bora.
Are there any particular gift/souveniers that echo French Polynesia. We usually spend under $50 each and this time need four presents.

Any help would be great as we leave next week! Can't wait!

You are going to Bora and to Moorea, You might want to pick up some "Arii Creations" Tees or Pareaus. On Moorea, you should stop at the Juice Factory (Rotui) and They have a complete line of their exotic liquers and fruits and fruit products... Very nice boutique and I am sure you will be able to find that little special something. But then again you might find that something special just for you also...

For women or girls, there's lots of nice shell jewellery. I have a beautiful mother-of-pearl hair clip, for instance. There are also wood carvings, and of course, pareos. Tiare perfume. I guess for the guys it's a bit tougher--beachware, t-shirts, liquor by all means. Jewellery can work for a young man too, depends on the person.

I am planning on gifts too (going next week). But mine will be more modest, more in the 10-20 buck range, tokens really. I'll be picking up lots of Tiare soap and oil, perfume and small pieces of jewellery for my women friends, plus a couple of pareos.

Vanilla beans! Especially for cooks. And your luggage will smell wonderful. Snip a bit into the coffee grounds in the morning for French Vanilla coffee.

I was in Tahiti nealry a year ago. I brought back material, vanilla and cds, as gifts. My parents loved the cd the best. I wish I bought more cds while I was there. They seemed expensive, and I did buy more online after I returned, but my favorite was still the one I bought there (on impulse in the airport cuz the music was playing and I liked it and I sooo did not want to be leaving)

I did not buy soaps cuz none of the big bars smelled as strong to me as the little ones the hotel provided. After much research I discoverd they are all made by the same company (and once the big ones get wet the scent increases. I ordered some off the internet (more expensive) and am about half way through our last big bar. Next time I will come homw with as much as I can fit in my suitcase.

have a great trip. We owe alot less in taxes than we thought. Maybe just enough for a short trip to Moorea...

Tahitian calendars, date books, address books, "how to tie a pareo" booklet, etc. These are cheap, flat, unbreakable, and easily packed.

Bizmo,
What CD did you buy in Tahiti? I also, bought a couple when I was there and my favorite is Pape Ora by Tapu Arii. I would like to buy some more, any suggestions as to which ones are good listening? Thank You!

I do NOT recommend bringing back the "delicious" pineapples. I bought the pineapples at Juice Factory/Distillary in Moorea rather than a regular convenience store. Picked them up at airport all boxed up & taped with some kind of agricultural inspection seal. The lady where I picked up the pineapples assured me that pineapples are NOT a problem to bring back. When I arrived at LAX US Customs, 5 out of 12 pineapples (total $50) were confiscated because live bugs were found on them. The US Customs inspector said that I was LUCKY to get some back compared to other people. If you love pineapples & must bring them back, lug them home at your own risk.
I bought guava & pineapple juice. So far, one carton is rotten & I'm not ready to try the other cartons to face another dissappointment.
I brought back vanilla beans- compact, light & easy to pack.

You should have bought your pineapple at the airport before you departed. We brought back 8 pineapples and there were no bugs in any of them. It only added about 10 minutes to our time getting though the agricultural inspection. We will do the same thing this year when we go. Nothing compares to Tahiti pineapple!
