Anonymous Unregistered

Hi all! We just got back from 5 weeks on Moorea, and I thought we'd share some general info about things going on there.

The taxi pass that you buy at the interisland flight counter for transport from the Moorea airport to your hotel is still 500f ($5) apiece, but the taxi service doesn't run after 5 p.m. If you are arriving on ATN and taking the last connecting interisland flight after 5 p.m., you need to make other ground transport arrangments. When we arrived at 7:45 p.m. at the Moorea Airport, we bought a transfer from Albert Tours (the only service still open at that hour) for $10 apiece. The taxi transfers are still a good deal for the way back!

The internet cafe at Iguana Rock Cafe is closed, although the computer terminals are still there. I don't know if the owner is just on vacation or whether the company went under. Tiki-Net is still operating with 3 computers, one with an American keyboard, for 20f (20 cents) a minute. The mana server is still slow, although they are talking about getting broadband soon!

The Ono Ono ferry no longer runs between Cooks' Bay and Papeete. The Arameti 4 and Moorea Express are the best way to get there, from Vaiare. Le truck service is not at all reliable on Moorea anymore.

Carole's Boutique (near Le Petit Village) is once again open, and has some NICE wood carvings from the Marquesas. There is a new shop across the street from the Rene Junior magasin, called "Moorea Cool," with some great gift/souvenirs. Chickenman (Royal Chicken) is busy, busy, busy, so book your dinner chicken by mid-morning, or you don't get one! $12 for the whole big chicken and $4 for the Rosemary potatoes -- one of the best deals around!

I got to see Fare Hamara (private house) this trip... what a GORGEOUS place! Anyone who wants a lovely big octagonal house that sleeps 8, complete with all appliances and supplies (there is even a washer and dryer!)with a STUNNING view of Cook's Bay and absolute privacy, should definitely check this out! Email Bob and Mary at hamara@harbornet.com. AWESOME! I want to have out next family reunion there!!

If I think of any other news, I'll add it to this post.

Thanks Yves. BarbiJKM I called Yves and he edited
your great post as my web site has some links that
don't fall within Yves's rules. One correction the
house is on Opunohu Bay.

Bob

Thanks, Hamara! (Sorry, Yves, I was too jet-lagged to remember the rules!) Bob, the house was stunning, and I would highly recommend it to anyone! I'll email you soon with some photos...

Glenn,

Yes, we did need to get a short-stay visa (30-90 days)from the French Consulate. Because we live in Phoenix, the nearest consulate is in Los Angeles. I flew to LA for a day, about a month before we left, to get the paperwork processed in person, but there is an available procedure to do it by mail (just allow a lot of time, like 4-6 weeks). In person, they give you the visa the same day. If you are bringing forms for two people, make sure the form for anyone not present is notarized! The forms are available online at http://www.consulfrance-losangeles.org/english. Follow the instructions EXACTLY or your application will be rejected and you will need to re-do it. Lots of copies are required -- three months of paychecks, bank account statements, your original round trip plane tickets and passport, a paid hotel reservation for the length of your stay, etc. They don't want you to arrive and not have enough money to support yourself the entire time and be able to get home!

If you stay 30 days or less, no visa is needed with an American passport.

Great Information! Any more news about Moorea Village Hotel - we will be there Aug 29 thru Sept 6. So you were escaping the Phoenix heat!! We are in Tucson, but it is still too hot (maybe it will cool off by Oct!) Thanks!

Beth,

I just posted some pictures of the Moorea Village hotel property on this website under "Photo Albums" titled "August Moorea Village Photos." I hope this gives you a good idea of how beautiful it is there! Also, if you are going soon, please take a look at my "August MV Beach Dogs" photo album and please feed my poor Smugly dog while you are there!

SusanS,

I emailed you... it will be nice to chat with you!
