Mim, Thanks for the tip...interestingly, we did have Travelguard for this trip...it was the first time we had ever purchased travel insurance...only because the "investment" in the trip was so large this time...and the trip wasn't a business expense. Looks like it will more than pay for itself.

For those of you who promote "packing heat"....take a look at this website.....You need sound for this one.

I also purchased insurance "just in case" - didn't need it, unless you count the loss of my favorite eyebrow tweezers (can we submit claims for pain and suffering? . . . I still haven't been able to find a pair of tweezers that worked as well as those did and I've been hairy and bushy-browed ever since!). I wonder what I did/said/looked like to make myself a "marked individual"??? What do you look like Mim??? I am a tall, slender, blue-eyed blonde female. Perhaps I looked too American . . . and was "profiled" as such? Mmmmmhhh.

Well today the TSA sent me a Federal Gov't claim form...for "damage, injury or death"....all I asked them was --- Did they have a lost and found at SEATAC? Doesn't look like the Airlines and the TSA have figured out an "integrated" plan on lost items yet.

Here's the URL for the TSA list of permitted / prohibited items

http://www.tsa.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/Permitted_Prohibited.doc

Generally it makes sense, but some of the permitted items (cigar cutters?) can be fairly leathal.....tweezers are ok... looks like they've done a flip/flop on the knitting needles...there used to be a "length" limitation.

The TSA is also pursuing a lighter weight (tamperproof) wire tie or lock, that they can put on after the inspection that...

"can be removed with a force of 11 to 13 lbs. Most passengers should be able to break these seals by twisting the seal or snipping with a pair of scissors at their destination. In a hotel, travelers who need assistance in removing ties should contact the front desk or the housekeeping department for scissors, which should easily cut most ties."

The 3/16 wire tie previously used would require more than scissors to remove. They're learning as they go.

Oh I'm sure the government will get it right and traveling by air will be a joy again! (heavy sarcasm)

Hey thanks for the link, that was some pretty funny reading. I'm kind of dissappointed that I cannot bring my hand grenade or sword on the flight though. Shucks.

RE: the small wirecutters idea, it looks like tools are prohibited although most wirecutters are blunt tipped. What you could do is check a soft side bag with outside pockets, and put a cheap pair of wirecutters in the accessible outside pocket. As long as there is room left after you stuff your meat cleaver in there.

I am trying to get an image of these wire ties, but if its the plastic item im thinking of, you really don't need wire cutters to cut it. Scissors, assuming there is enough of a gap, will do the trick. But im guessing there isnt such a gap.
And having been around wire cutters with work, the most damage ive ever seen them do to a human is pinching some of my fat fingers between them. and i used to travel witha pair in my computer case all the time.

for some humor, i cant recall which george carlin cd its on, but he did a bit on airport security (pre-9/11). some of it lost a bit of humor afterwards, but its still funny...

Yep, the standard, "white" in this case, plastic wire tie. These were about 8 to 10 inches long and about 3/16 wide, so pretty heavy duty.

Perhaps some of those Indestructo-scissors that are offered on late night TV (that cut pennies in two) might cut them -- but standard office or grooming scissors would not. Std. Scissors would cut the smaller wire ties.

And yes, these were crimped right down to the bottom so there was no room to maneuver. Check the TSA website referred to above. None of the items that could normally be used to cut these can be carried in your carry on. Pliers, scissors or those neat crimping tools you get in the wire connector sets are prohibited in the carry on.

The item you are all calling wire ties are actually called Cable Ties. Not that it makes any difference. Easily cut with scissors.

When we went to Mexico, I put a small, cheap, fake, Swiss Army knife in the outside pocket of my checked suitcase, and did not lock that pocket or anything. Maybe I was just lucky, but it made it to and from Mexico (although I was surprised that it survived the trip). I did use my own tie wraps to lock up the major pockets, and used that little Swiss Army knife to cut off the new ones put on by the airport security. Just a thought, if you can afford to possibly lose a few dollars.
