That depends a lot upon where you are staying. All of the large hotels provide them in your rooms... The pensions normally do not have beach towels...

The Sofitel Ia Ora on Moorea does not supply beach towels in your room. You have to go to a hut on the beach and check out a towel each day along with fins. They have to be returned by the end of the day or you will be charged for them. Possibly the overwater bungalows might be supplied with beach towels but I know that the beach and garden bungalows are not. The first year that we went we took our own towels. Unfortunately someone stole one of them off of our front porch. I didn't bother the next trip and I won't on our return trip this year.

I like the longer beach towels than the hotels have so I bring my own. They have good ones at Costco for about $12

cheberer,
We just got back from Le Meridien Bora Bora, They have nice big beach towels in the rooms.
Le Meridien Bora Bora is probably the prettiest setting of all the hotels. You won't want to eat dinner there though, food is just okay and expensive. Make sure you go to Top Dive and Bloody Mary's for dinner. Pass on the Bamboo House though (very small portions, okay food).
When you take the water taxi over to the main land, go down to the end of the drive way and turn right. There is a small store there, where you can buy Beer, wine, water etc at a fraction of the cost of the hotel.
One of the best things we took with us was a inexpensive water raft. We would walk down the steps of our water bungalow and drift around in the water. The snorkeling is fantastic in the lagoon area (especially if you take one of the rolls from the restaurant with you snorkeling, just keep it hidden in your hand and let a bit out at a time for the fish - incredible).
Everyone talks about the mosquitos and bugs there, but we didn't encounter any.
Take a bottle of your favourite booze with you for your room as the drinks at the hotels range from $13.00 US to $20.00 Us, then buy some mix at the store on the main land.
Enjoy.... it is so beautiful and quiet there. I would suggest doing the Off Road aventure on Bora Bora or Moorea. And the Shark and Ray feeding on Moorea for sure.

"suppose they also have towels if you go out shopping?"
Wrong answer. Either bring a towel or depend on your hotel to provide you with one. Shopping for a towel requires a trip to Papeete where you'll pay at least 3 or 4 times what you'd spend here. This is NOT the land of a Wal-mart on every corner. Think of it this way: bring the item or do without it, as it will either be impossible to find in FP, or will cost more than you want to pay. Get ready, cheberer, you are in for culture shock! Hope you have a nice trip.

Karyn..thank you for GREAT information...We are taking a raft and a collapsable cooler. We did purchase a meal plan, but a lot of people have indicated that the regular restaurant at the hotel is better than the buffet? We do plan to go to Bloody Mary's one night..Thank you for your great info..really getting excited about going!!!!

Very smart to take the collapsible cooler - beats using a garbage can or sink. You will have a wonderful time. I'm still using the monai oil I brought back (ok, so I have to set it in the sun to get it back to a liquid state, but it's great).
