We want to do three or four nights on Maupiti, and then go on to Raiatea. Any suggestions for pensions that have good snorkeling, and water front bungalows?

We went to Maupiti for a week last October and stayed 4 nights at Kuriri Village on a motu and 4 nights in a simple pension on the main island. All the accomodations on Maupiti are pretty basic. The best snorkeling is on the NW corner of the island and I don't think there are any pensiones nearby. The pensiones on the main island that I know of are jsut like staying in a family house. It is a small island that you can walk around in about 3 hours. We really liked the simplicity and lack of tourists. Kuriri Village was the kind of place we like - basic and friendly with wonderful food but isn't anything like staying at a resort in French Polynesia. None of the bungalows are right on the beach but there is a covered platform on the beach where we spent a lot of time reading relaxing and watching for whales. Hubert will take you to the main island to hike or snorkel for about $10 I think. There is some snorkeling out front and you can also walk a short distance to the pass where there's a small area to snorkel. I have some photos if you want to email me at paul@directcon.net I can send them to you.
