Hello,

My husband and I visited Huahine a couple of years ago and stayed at the Pension Mauraii. I notice that they have a new website and the facilities and bungalows look to be much improved. Just wondering if anyone has visited the pension within the last year and, if so, how was the accommodation, food and service?

Hi Chris! We are deposited with this villa for Sept. 27 x 3 nites. The owner has 2 villas - we are renting the Bird of Paradise Villa. The most appealing part is that the package includes use of car and boat. I'd be happy to provide feedback upon our return after Oct. 13th. Feel free to send me an email reminder for a report on this villa.

We will be at the Pension Maurarii on 9/23 (I think that's the right date) and are wondering about car/scooter rental.

Just read a very unflattering report about this facility on another board and I'm quite concerned..they ended up leaving after two nights. We are used to small pensions, but don't want a dump..any recent reports here? Thanks, Carol

Hi Carol, How long are you there, maybe we'll meet each other??
That news is scarey - what board are you referencing please, as I review at least 3-4 boards on a regular basis? We've paid only a deposit so if the 1st nite does not work out no great loss - I guess its on to the Te Tiara. We are not expecting luxury or fancy though , saving that for the Paull Gaughin cruise and the OW BBL Resort. I'd like to hear more on your itinerary if you like sharing.Best Regards!

People. Make your own informed decision and do not necessarily rely on ONE report that you read. Everybody has different experiences and snafus can happen anywhere at any time.

This person went on a budget holiday for 23 days with his whole family. I believe he stayed in the mezzanine bungalow housed with 2 other couples on different levels and not a private bungalow or villa. He is not a native english speaker so it was difficult to decipher actually what went wrong but it had to do with his portion of his accom not closing properly thus letting in the outside elements and he wanting to leave early and having a situation about a refund with a non english speaking employee.

None of us were there so it's very hard to figure out what specifically went wrong and I was confused after reading it. But it was not something that would affect my choice of staying if I were to.

We will be there for three nights--couldn't get the fourth and are trying to figure out whether to stay somewhere else for that fourth night or just go on to CBH and get one of their rooms until we can check in to our timeshare bungalow. We are booked in to one of the beachfront rooms at the Maurarii. How long are you there? drop me a line at capttrs@aol.com

Last time we were there we stayed at the Pension Poetaina but it isn't on the water and we wanted to be closer to the beach and snorkeling.

Our first time in Huahine was in '89 at the Bali Hai Hotel..now that was a great hotel and location but when we were last there in '99 we walked through the abandoned and trashed location..how sad.

Hey Carol! Actualy I became a lil' confused. Pension Maraii was one of my earlier considerations. We finally deciderd on AND booked Villa "Bird of Pardise". 1 of 2 villas owned by a Mr. Raphael Mateo (the other is called Ville de Bougainville)- quite personable guy, responsive to e-mails, and oh so courteous. Its an interesting linguistic phenomenon as he speaks broken English and I speak/write broken French but somehow via e-mailing we understand each other!
We will be there @ Villa Bird of Pardise Sept. 28 - Oct 4th - arrangement includes boat & car (US$205/nite), located on the SE corner of Huahine (nui) on Maroe Bay. It is self contained: cooking facilities, laundry etc. We were planning to head down to Maraii at least to check out the beach & lunch one day. Hope we can meet up & looking for another coupe to maybe do some reef/lagoon fishin' for dinner! Probably do the shark feed & motu picnic , check out the sacred blue-eyed eels, vanilla , & black pearls (loose) as well while there.

Raphael's place is great. it up a small hill with a great view of the bay. Its not on the beach and about a 10 minute drive into Fare. A great house as well and hopefully you will be there when they have a BB-Q everyone is invited and you will get a chance to meet the "gang". Its a great place and good choice.

Pacific Andy thanks for the reassurance that I'm in good hands with Raphael. Do you personally know any local fisherman who may either take us out (guide) or rent out fishing equipment (lagoon/reef not sport fishing).
Also -last question for this post - since I will be on Huahine with access to the Black Pearl farmers - do you think I have a better selection, quality, price on some loose pearls? Any personal recommendations on Huahine? Thanks Andy!

Richard Shamel an American who lives in Huahine has a Hatteras boat and can take you out for 1/2 day or full day fishing. I dont have his email with me but I will post in the A.M. If your buy some loose pearls and not spending more than a few hundred buck they do have on pearl store that all the tours stop by. The prices are not all that bad. I wouldnt spend big bucks there.
