Andy or any local Huahinians (that sounds weird) What is a local from Huahine called anyway? Anyway - thanks for the fishing guide recommendation. Does anyone know how to contact Richard Shamel on Huahine (what town he lives in maybe? Opinions solicited - if we have wheels and a boat, are pretty well traveled indepent travelers - should we do Huahine on our own, or might we need to hire a tour guide like Marc @ Nautique for example for the shark snorkel or maybe Motu picnic, is the pearl farm accessable only by boat? Can a small boat in Maroe Bay handle the ride over to the motu - due East of Maroe? Yeah I know yu ghuys must think this is 20 questions or something but I;m counting down the days 22 and must attend to these little details. Thanks guys!

Rosa - you can reach Rich Shamel by email at; huah.mar.trans@mail.pf/ He's the only licensed deep sea fish operator on the island. He is located at the Te Tiare Beach Resort boat transfer site in the village of Fare. You won't really find much in the way of renting fishing equipment. It's generally catch and release or either the capt. gets the bounty. Marc Garnier is the shark fishing, jet ski guy. As far as the pearls, Huahine Pearl Farm has a nice selection of pearls at very good prices. They don't have a wide variety of set jewelry, but for loose pearls, I find it to be quite good. If you have a boat, they have docking facilities. Just be careful with the coral.

Rich Shamel is a true gentleman and a great fisherman..............plus he is our own home town guy (Santa Barbara). You will not be disappointed in any fishing charter from Rich (also known as Sham). Those are his doggies that greet folks at the boat dock for the water taxi to and fro Te Tiare. The poochies will escort you to dinner and wait to bring you back to the dock as well. Is Raphael the brother of Maneva who works at Te Tiare? If so,we saw his property last year when we were there and it is so lovely. You are really lucky!! If the rest of his family is as gracious as is his sister Maneva (and why wouldn't they be?) you will have a great time and also learn about Polynesia, Huahine, the language and customs. AND PacAnd, I still want your job!!!

Brooke - I will check with Raphael about the relations but you're probably right about them being related. What job is it I have that you want? The one that's finaancing this trip? If so don't look to my job I'm a Federal employee (GS-13) I couldn't finance this on my salary! Perhaps it's my husband's job - and beleive you don't want it, yeah the money's good but he puts in nearly 80 hours per weekkk plaus 24 hours in hospital call several times/month. He's in anethesiology, a physician. I reallly don't get to see him much with those hours. Being wit him 24/7 for this FP triip will be a shocker. I'm really psyched about all the postive feedback about Mr. Matapo's villa. Thanks to all for the contact for Sham (and his pochies too)!

Rosa, no, it's not your job I want, it's Pacific Andy's. He travels to FP on business several times a year it seems so I figure that's the way to mix buisness with pleasure for sure! He won't say what it is he does because he says then the rest of us would all do it too!! Funny guy, eh? I have a civil service job as well so I know the score on that one myself, and am well acquainted with the demands of folks in medicine, a toughie most of the time and certainly at present. Looking forward to hearing about your trip and if I can locate the info I gathered while in Huahine last year, I'll pass it on. Please say hi to Richard for us and also give our greetings to Maneva should you meet her while you are there. Also got to tell you that you will love the Paul Gauguin, we just returned last Sun..fabulous!!

""Does anyone know how to contact Richard Shamel on Huahine (what town he lives in maybe?""
Richard lives in Fare just past the Gendermarie....
I have known Richard Shamel for over 25 years and will vouch for his honesty and integrety... Sham is a great fisherman, and he will do everything within his power to make your charter the very best possible.
I have fished with, and against Sham many times and respect his knowledge and performance both on and off the boat. You couldn't find a better guide or better captain...
His phone # on Huahine is 68 84 02
If you go out with him on a lagoon charter, or a deep sea one, tell him that Ken Jackson sends his aloha, and wishes him well...

Sorry, I didnt check back. Looks like all of Richards info has been exchanged. And yes it is Raphaels sister that works for Te Tiare. His father is a great guy as well, quite but fun. Richard is a good guy as well. I will be seeing the gang next weekend. It will be a long weekend to say the least.

Carol, are you still going to be staying at the Pension Mauarii? My husband and I will be in FP in March, and I had pretty well decided on that for the pension to stay in on Huahine, but I'd love to hear what you thought of it after you get back. Thanks!

Yes, we are staying three nights at the Mauarii and one at the Relais Mahana because the Mauarii didn't have another night. Turns out they just got in touch with us and have a garden bungalow for that night but we had already reserved at Relais Mahana and are very curious to compare the two!
