I just discovered some very bad reviews on tripadvisor for this place. We booked it for 4 nights and I'm a bit scared...

We did not stay there but we ate there. The food was excellent and huge portions. The people were very friendly. What did the reviews say? I don't know if I would like the rooms but the beach bungalow is RIGHT on the water. It is a beautiful location.

Ditto on the Pension(didn't stay there but here's our experience). We showered there after a snorkeling trip and the shared facilities are primitive. Not all accomodations are like that. Some have private baths. The lunch was fabulous. It was group eating and the Italians at our table were enjoying their stay. The beach is gorgeous(white sand, beautful, clear water, eagle rays and motus nearby). Read into reviews- if the people sound picky, they probably are and this place is for the more adventurous type who is easygoing about accomodations.

There are several types of accomodations there. We stayed in a beach bungalow which was "attached", or duplex style. There is a shower and sink in the room but you must go around the bungalow, down a little walk and to a crushed coral platform which has all the private toilets and a couple of sinks. You DO have a private toilet, it's just that you have to walk a bit to get to it--it was more of a challenge on a rainy night as I tried to manage my flashlight and umbrella! The showers and sinks in the room drain to the sand, no doubt all the toilets are connected to a sewer system!
There is one private bungalow, on the sand, looked really nice, but booked way ahead. There are several garden bungalows that accomodate families or several good friends--we looked at them and thought they were too warm for us.
There are so many different accomodations on all the islands of Tahiti, this is just one more adventure! Bring your own mosquito coil and matches-they ran out when we first got there.

It is that bad and more. We leave this Monday for an 18 day, 3 island tour with two other couples. My wife and I extended our stay an additional 3 days to get away from the big resorts and spend the time in a beach bungelow on a relaxed island. The Pension Mauarii looked perfect. We booked and paid in full for our entire trip last October (10 months ago). We got confirmations back from everyone including Pension Mauarii. We had the beach bungelow all reserved for our last 3 days in FP. On June 24 the Pension e-mailed our travel agent and said that they had booked someone else in the bungelow but we could have a beach room with outside toilet and connected to larger multi- person units. We contacted Pension Mauarii and said no go. They said that our travel agent had cancelled our reservation sometime during the winter. When we asked for a copy of the cancellation they could not provide one. When we asked if they had refunded our money when it was "cancelled" they didn't reply. This is, of course, high season; accomodations are very hard to find at this very late date. Tahiti Sun Travel has gotten us into a large resort on Tahiti for our last 3 days. It certainly isn't what we paid for and fantasized about for 10 months. If you think that you can trust Pension Mauarii to honor their reservations, even though confirmed, please remember what they did to us.

There are other options on Huahine. Did you try any of those?

As I stated, it is high season and very booked up. Pension Mauarii really left us hanging. Again, it did not seem right that we should have to settle for anything other than what we had paid for 10 months previously. These people cannot be trusted with your money.

I only asked if you had tried some other places in Huahine as Huahine is my favorite. There are many places that are not associated with travel agents in Huahine. I'm too lazy to look it up, but Pacific Andy has listed several times on this site the website for the pensions. One year I was SO excited about going to our beloved Sofitel in Huahine. I had enough points to upgrade to an OWB. I too booked it months in advance. Then 2 months before we are to leave, we were informed that the Sofitel was closed. No OWB for me! We then stayed in our newly beloved Villas Bougainville ,and last year we rented a house from Marty at Chez Guynette. There are tents on the beach-does he still have them? They are not tents as one pictures but rather houses. Then there is the Huahine Beach house which is in an excellent location. So if you want Huahine, there are other options- but ?perhaps because as you say, it is the high season. I've even seen places for rent listed on the supermarket bulletin board in Huahine.

I guess as OP I should give you an update...
Yes, it's bad. Many people when they arrive and see it, leave right away and go to Relais Mahana. The problem is, it's not that much better...
Huahine is a beautiful island. More garden like than BB. It's more about the land here. But... there are a few "buts". First there is no good accomodation except Ta Tiere. The people of Mauarii are nice and try to help, but they have what they have. Old, humid environment, without A/C, bathrooms look like you don't want to touch anything there... Pretty awful. The food is bad too. Mosquitos everywhere - be careful! We got bitten quite bad... The only people who stay there are French tourists/backpackers.
What you have to do to survive Huahine and keep some good memories is renting a car. It let you visit the entire island and you can eat at the airport. I'm not kidding! The only clean place to eat on that island is a little snack place at the airport - they are clean and have great sandwiches (thank you guys!) Everything else on Huahine is something you hesitate to touch. It's a backpacker destination and it's sad... The "town" is awful. Nobody cares about too many dogs running around. It's poor like other islands, but it's just not being taken care of which is strange. It's as beautiful as some other popular islands and could be a great destination - there is just no effort/no interest to build some clean hotels and places to eat... I can except simple, but rats on the beach during my vacation kind of kill it... (yeah, we saw rats in Mauarii).
Overall we're happy we went there and visited this beautiful place. I'm a photographer and every morning and evening we were chasing the nicest sunrise/sunset we could find. But we also knew our next step would be Thalasso and Bora Bora so we kind of accepted the conditions for a few days.
We won't go to Huahine again. We will be back to Bora Bora as soon as we can. Thalasso is a paradise. And after having visited many places in the world, this is the first one for us ;-) - want to come back right away!

Never cease to be amazed how folks' perceptions can be so different. We would not stay at Mauraii ourselves because we found our spot in Paradise at the Te Tiare. There are not alot of restuarants on the island because the island isn't over- developed.....thankfully. The roulottes in Fare are clean and serve simple basic food. Chez Guynette is wonderful! and incredibly clean as is the pastiserrie (never can spell that correctly). Since we were there last March, we've heard that a place has opened/reopened near the transfer base for the Te Tiare and serves nice food with a French flair. Rats and mozzies are apart of life in tropical places.......actually, they are even here in SB as are mozzies! You didn't see the large packs of wild dogs on Bora? That surprises me but then you were staying at a new resort on a motu rather than on the mainland of Bora, am I correct? Am glad that you appreciated the unspoiled beauty of Huahine....surprised that you found it dirty.
