We stayed in a beach bungalow to the left of the main resort (as you look out at the water.)
It remains the nicest hotel room I have ever occupied. We did not miss the over-water bungalow at all. It will be interesting to hear your report when you have done both.

Wendy, What activities were available at PB Manihi when you were there and which did you participated in? Do they still have kayaks and bikes? (83 days to go !)

We stayed in OWB #40 at the PB which is the one pictured in the photo above. It was awesome! We didn't go over to the "premium" but we had the most amazing view from our bungalow of the reef. There are tons of sharks, spotted eagle rays, eels, octopus and hundreds of fish. The water was about waist to chest deep right under the bungalow and gradually tapered off but we spent the majority of our snorkeling time right in front of the bungalow, it was truly amazing. As far as activities they have pearl farm tours, motu picnic, etc. We went scuba diving but didn't get a chance to do any other excursions because they don't offer the same thing every day. They do have kayaks and bikes for use at the hotel. Not sure where you can really bike to though because you need a boat to get to the village. But we loved Manihi it was gorgeous with the most prolific wildlife and would definitely recommend it.

Hmm, activities on Manihi.
The only thing we did was the pearl farm trip. That was really interesting and we got to go out across the lagoon to do it.
We just lazed around, took naps, ate, drank, snorkelled. We were only there for three days. There was an organized snorkelling trip, and of course dive trips, but we didn't get around to it. There was also a motu picnic available I think.
Don't remember kayaks, but that doesn't mean they weren't there.

Hi Blueman,
I've been reading these posts for about one month. My husband and I are planning our first trip to French Polynesia for August of 2004. It looks like you will be going next month - lucky you! I hope that you are still reading these boards and will write a report following your trip. We are planning to cruise on the Paul Gauguin but want to do a pre-cruise stay on one of the islands the ship does not visit and Manihi looks perfect to us. We are snorkelers, but not divers. We have snorkeled among white tip reef sharks in Hawaii so I will take the word of the people in French Polynesia that the black tip reef sharks will not give us any problem.
Have a great trip! And please write details of your trip to share with the rest of us who are eagerly planning future vacations.

Thanks, Kathy! We're just thrilled to be able to spend three weeks in FP. We have planned the whole trip ourselves. We've travelled with the children since they were embryos so our travel plans are always a bit different from most people's. The kids can't wait to snorkle all day; just yesterday we went shopping for fish i.d. cards with them. We started diving lessons in case we decide to take advantage of the wonderful diving opportunities. We'll report upon our return. We're first going to Tahiti to visit with friends, then on to Bora Bora and then on to Manihi for total relaxation. We'll take a day trip to Moorea and/or Maupiti, depending on what we feel like doing and what the weather is like... 13 days to go - but who's counting!
