We just got back from 6 days in Rangoria. We loved the atoll experience and were we glad added that experience to the volanic islands of tahiti, moorea and bora bora. Rangoria is a great experience because of the poeple we stay 4 nights at Tuanake pesione and found the staff wonderful taking us to where ever we what to go.
While there we took the blue logon excursion which was great. You truely get the feel of being total away for it all on your on private island for a day with great food and swimming. We also took the glass boat boat thru the pass somewhat whimpy for a diver who could not dive because of an injury on moorea but very interesting and worth the time for my nondiving wife. Atoll passes are something very special in our world and rangoria's Tiputa pass is one of the best. The dolphins like to play in the waves that occur in the pass at low-high tide and it is was a very special sight to watch them in a natural envirment, jumping and playing just for the fun of it. We also eat a Le ralais de Josephine a pessione locate right on the pass. Great food with a great veiw. We spend our final 2 nights at the Kio Ora and found the luxury of AC very welcome after 10 days without. Kio ora is a very nice resort with white sand beaches unlike most the island white coral beaches. The key word here is coral like rock. We truely enjoyed Rangi and would strongly recommend that people add it to there trip to french polynesia.

Woohoo! Great and timely post. Staying 6 nights on Rangiroa in July - 2 at Kia Ora Village and 4 at the Sauvage!

You didn't happen to notice any sport/deep sea fishing info while on Rangiroa did you? I'm having a heck of a time getting info.

No I realy did not see or do any deep sea fishing. There's a great book title"tahiti' by Jan Prince who alos publishes the only engish paper in Tahiti she mentions Pa'ati Excursion 689-79.24.63 , Tane excursions 689.96.84.68 and Vave'a Excursions 689-96.02.88. Plus Kia ora has a real good activities desk I sure they can help. Good luck I'm sure the fishing is great.

Jack,

Your excitment for Rangiroa will be well rewarded when you get there. My wife and I spent a year living on Tahiti (got back 6 weeks ago) and for our going away present spent five nights at Kia Ora. Being a diver we chose a beach bungalow at the Tiputa Pass end of Kia Ora so we could walk a short block to 6 Passengers Dive Centre. This pass has all you would hope to find in diving in FP and Kia Ora has all the friendly, helpful attitude that makes you feel at home. They will be able to arrange fishing for you if the weather is OK. The only reason activities get cancelled is if there is not enough people to justify the expense. Be sure to discuss this if you are willing to go just by yourself.

Rangiroa holds all that is good about FP and all that is hard. Don't kid yourself, these people face a most difficult challenge living in a very isolated and therefore expensive place in the world. The stuff we took for granted on Tahiti was a major production on Rangiroa but isn't that the whole reason for travel. They have been working on completing a pool at Kia Ora and I hope its done now; but if you saw the boys working (barefoot) in 88 degree weather mixing cement in a mixer one at a time to pour a pool you just shake your head!!!

So there is a reason for all you experience in FP and the challenge for us is to figure it out and then have fun. Otherwise, just go to Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and order a Maitai and pretend...

Hi Hammersb. Welcome back. I remember your postings from sometime back. I don't think I realized that you and your wife moved to FP for a year! How lucky you are. Are you French? I bet you have some wonderful tales to tell and we'd all love to hear them!

I'm more French now than when I went, thats for sure but no, just someone from Santa Barbara that decided to go for it. So yes, you can live there if you want to.

Can someone tell me how the water is here in Rangiroa ? Is it calm We loved the lagoon in Bora Bora and are looking for something similar for our next trip. Any ideas about the other motus would be appreciated. We've been to Moorea also and want someplace new this time.

The water in the Rangiroa lagoon was very calm when we were there. As you get further out (only by boat) it can quite quite choppy also around the passes, but for swimming and snorkelling it was like a mill pond near us. The trip to the Blue lagoon is wonderful as for other Tuamotus, sadly I've not been...maybe one day !

The water around the owb's at the KOV was calm while we were there. There were quite a few boats fairly close off the owb's. The water was a little cloudy compared to the coral gardens in Bora. We shot the pass, snorkeling, where the water was extremely clear. They wait for a strong current from the ocean to the lagoon. The current was strong but not rough. It was an interesting experience and only required a small amount of effort to keep with the group. After we shot the pass, we went to the "aquarium" where the water was very calm, and mostly clear.
As of the end of May, They were still working on the pool at the KOV, as well as other construction projects around the resort.
We also went to Tikehau, in an owb at the Pearl Beach resort. The water was extremely clear, but very shallow, with no access from the owb's. The overwater's do not have a/c and we really needed it. The winds were light, and when they did blow, it was smoky trying to keep mosquitos away. The beach bungalows are the way to go in Tikehau. The views into the water and fish watching from the owb were great. The water was somewhat to very clear snorkeling off the beach. It was calm near the beach. It was a little choppy on the high speed boat ride to the bird island. We had some of the most awesome sunsets and sunrises at Tikehau and the night skies were incredible!.
